Scalia Honored as Big Ten Player of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's guard Sara Scalia has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time, the conference announced Monday. The Stillwater, Minn., native, dropped 37 points, nailed nine threes and collected eight rebounds in the Maroon and Gold's 99-93 win over Ohio, the Mid-American Conference preseason favorite, last week.

Scalia's performance against the Bobcats goes down as the best three-point shooting night by any Gopher at Williams Arena. The junior hit nine threes, the most by any Gopher (men's or women's) at the Barn since the building opened 93 years ago in 1928. Her hot night of shooting beyond the arc ranks her second in Big Ten history in threes made against a non-conference opponent and gives her the second most in a single game in program history, just one behind Rachel Banham's 10 against Illinois on the road in 2016.

Leading the Gophers to victory, Scalia did so with a career high of 37 points, her second 30-point performance of her career. She also snagged a season-high eight rebounds while shooting a staggering 14-of-21 from the floor and 9-of-13 from beyond the arc. Scalia's incredible night also goes down as the highest scoring game in program history without attempting a free throw. Her nine made threes are the most by any Big Ten student-athlete this season and makes Scalia one of just nine in the country to have made nine or more in a game this season.

The conference honor is the second of the season for the Gophers after Alanna Micheaux secured a Freshman of the Week honor back on Dec. 6. For Scalia, it is the third time she has earned a weekly honor, but the first time as the Player of the Week. Scalia was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice during her rookie campaign. The Player of the Week distinction is the first for a Golden Gopher since Dec. 9, 2019, when Taiye Bello was named the Player of the Week after a pair of double-doubles.

On the season Scalia leads the team with an average of 14.9 points per game. Her staggering 43.7 percent from three is good enough for the fourth-best clip in the Big Ten this season and her 2.9 threes made per game is good enough for the third best rate in the conference this season.
