Gophers Announce Incoming Signing Class

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota director of track and field and cross country Matt Bingle is pleased to announce the addition of 19 student-athletes who have all signed National Letters of Intent with the Golden Gophers for the 2022-23 season.
The newest class of Gophers includes eight men and 11 women with the talented class coming from all over the country.
Hailey Anchor, Wisconsin Dells High School, Wis. (Multi Event)
Crossing the border into the great state of Minnesota is Hailey Anchor out of Wisconsin Dells High School. Talented in both the 400m and the 800m, Anchor is a multiple time top eight finisher in the 400m in Wisconsin and finished in third in the 800m at the 2021 Wisconsin Division 2 state meet. She is a three-sport athlete, participating in cross country, basketball and track and field.
Coach Colleen Sowa on Anchor: "I'm excited to have Hailey join our program as a future multi. When first talking to Hailey, she seemed pretty set on a different path for her college track and field career. After more conversation and discussion, she chose Minnesota to chase her dream of being a D1 Big Ten student- athlete. She is a very versatile athlete, she can do it all from the 100m- 800m, long jump to high jump. Her personality and drive to be great will make her a fantastic addition to our team. I'm excited she chose us to help her take her talents to the next level."
Ramy Ayoub, Farmington, Minn., Farmington High School (Sprints)
On the men's side of the 2022 sprints signees, Ramy Ayoub joins the Gophers as a talented 400m runner out of Farmington, Minn. He was the individual runner-up in the 400m in 2021 and was a part of the Farmington 4x400m relay team that won the state championship this past season.
Coach Ibrahim Kabia on Ayoub: "Ramy is a talented young man who comes from a great family and great track program at Farmington High School. He is one of, if not the best sprinter in the state of Minnesota. Ramy is an outstanding student, has a great passion for the sport and works extremely hard. I am excited to be working with him next fall."
Laubenra Ben, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Park Center High School (Sprints)
Another short sprinter signee on the women's side is Laubenra Ben. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native brings in personal best times of 12.24 in the 100m, 24.56 in the 200m and 56.05 in the 400m. Ben will bring quality depth to the Gophers sprint group and brings in experience in big moments as the Minnesota State runner-up in 2021 in the 400m.
Coach Matthew Bingle on Ben: "I am excited to have Laubenra in our Sprints group for the future. She has a great range and feel like she can continue to develop as a sprinter at the college level. She also fits our group culture and will make the group better as she is a great young woman."
Zoie Dundon, Burnsville, Minn., Burnsville High School (Mid-Distance/Distance)
The Golden Gophers kept one of the best individual Minnesota athletes in the state with the signing of Zoie Dundon. Out of Burnsville, Minn., Dundon brought home the first Burnsville High School individual state championship in over 10 years when she won the 800m title in a time of 2:10.54. She also brings in great times in the 1600m at 4:58.70 and in cross country with a 5K time of 18:28.
Coach Sarah Hopkins on Dundon: "It is always a goal to keep the top Minnesota kids in Minnesota and Zoie is one of the best all-around athletes in the state. She grew up as a hockey player and still plays varsity hockey all winter. She has proven to have great range on the track that extends up to being a very solid cross country runner. We are excited to see what Zoie can accomplish when she has some great middle distance training partners!"
Shane Griepentrog, Valders Wis., Valders High School (Distance)
Signing with the Gophers out of the Badger state is Shane Griepentrog of Valders High School. A talented distance runner on and off the track, Griepentrog was a cross country state champion as well as winning the 3200m state title and bringing home a runner-up finish in the 1600m. Notably, Griepentrog was undefeated his senior cross country season and brings in personal bests of 4:15 in the 1600m and 9:22 in the 3200m.
Coach Brad Wick on Griepentrog: "Shane knows how to win and how to push himself every time he competes. His athleticism and work ethic will make him a standout at this next level."
Tanner Klumph, Missoula, Mont., Sentinel High School (Distance)
Joining the Gophers from the Treasure State is Tanner Klumph. Specifically out of Missoula, Mont., Klumph is a cross country state champion with solid times on the track as well. He brings in personal bests of 4:16 in the 1600m and 9:19 in the 3200m.
Coach Brad Wick on Klumph: "Tanner is a big time recruit from outside the Midwest. He has great leadership qualities and will be a big part of the program during his career at Minnesota."
Anna Lien, Fargo, ND, Fargo North High School (Mid-Distance/Distance)
One of Minnesota's lone North Dakota signees Anna Lien brings in depth and solid times in the 800m and in cross country. She has a personal best time of 2:16.05 in the 800m and has a 5K cross country time of 18:27 in her prep career.
Coach Sarah Hopkins on Lien: "Anna has wanted to be a gopher since she was little and we are so excited to bring one of North Dakota's best to Minnesota. Anna will fit well into our young mid-distance group with her great range and will continue to grow and develop over the next four years."
Owen Lindseth, Minneapolis, Minn., Minneapolis Southwest High School (Distance)
Staying right at home is Minneapolis Southwest's Owen Lindseth. Primarily a 1600m runner, Lindseth brings in a personal best of 4:22 in that event.
Coach Brad Wick on Lindseth: "Owen will bring a great energy to our team. He has really improved his endurance this fall cross country season which will carry over to some big time times on the track."
Jakob McCleary, Perham, Minn., Perham High School (Middle-Distance/Distance)
Another Minnesota native joins the Gophers' distance crew in the form of Jakob Mccleary. Out of Perham High School McCleary brings in personal bests of 1:55 in the 800m while also a 4:16 in the 1600m. He was the state champion in the 800m and as a cross country runner, proving he can provide talent in more ways than one for the Golden Gophers.
Coach Brad Wick on McCleary: "Jakob has great middle distance speed and endurance which is a nice combo to have at this level. He's a great competitor and knows how to win."
Finn McCormick, St. Paul, Minn., Nova High School (Distance)
Out of St. Paul, Minn., Finn McCormick is remaining home with the Golden Gophers. The Nova High School standout led much of the Class A state cross country championship before finishing eighth at the meet last season.
Coach Brad Wick on McCormick: "Finn is a guy who really came on the scene this fall and raised his game to a new level. He has all the tools we are looking for in a recruit and an important piece to our puzzle over the next few years."
Brooke Moore, Florissant, Mo., Westminster Christian Academy (Horizontal Jumps/Hurdles)
Joining the Gophers from Florissant, Mo., is Brooke Moore. A mainstay on the AAU circuit, Moore was the Missouri State Champion in the triple jump in 2021 and was a third-place finisher in the 100m hurdles and snagged a third place in the 4x200m relay with his high school squad. On the AAU circuit Moore was the 2021 AAU Junior Olympics Triple Jump Champion.
Coach Ibrahim Kabia on Moore: "Brooke has had a great high school career and continues to get better. She is a great talent and has the ability to do multiple things on the track. She is outstanding academically and has an infectious personality that would fit really well with our team. We recruited Brooke for a long time and we could not be more excited that she will be joining our program next fall."
Anthonette (Annie) Nabwe, Jamestown, ND, Jamestown High School (Throws)
Signing with the Gophers out of the Peace Garden State is Anthonette (Annie) Nabwe. Out of Jamestown, Nabwe was born in Liberia and came to the United States in eighth grade. She was the state champion in shot put and discus and impressively was the state runner-up in the 100m and finished third in the javelin. Her shot put personal best ranks her fourth in the North Dakota Class A high school rankings and fourth in the 2022 recruiting class rankings in the nation. Her 100m also ranked sixth in North Dakota Class A high school history. Annie is a three-sport athlete, playing basketball, volleyball along with competing in track and field.
Coach Peter Miller on Nabwe: "Annie has an incredible life story, matched only by her physical gifts. We have never recruited an athlete quite like her, but we are very excited to work with her and see what her ceiling really is? Annie has gone through many challenges in life, and will bring a lot to our program beyond her track talent. She is a great student, and comes from a very close family. We are extremely excited to welcome her into our Gopher Track and Field family."
Izzy Roemer, Chanhassen, Minn., Chanhassen High School (Distance)
An up and coming talent out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Roemer joins the Gophers out of Chanhassen, Minn. She was a Section 2AA title winner for Chanhassen and also won the Metro West Conference Championship. She brings in top times of 4:50.37 in the 1600m and a 10:26.73 in the 3200m.
Coach Sarah Hopkins on Roemer: "Izzy had a breakout season last spring on the track that saw her running some of the best distance times in the country! She is a talented runner, and an even better person who will fit in great at Minnesota athletically and as a great teammate. We are excited that Izzy is staying home and can't wait to see her in maroon and gold next year!"
I'Tianna Salaam, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., De LaSalle High School (Sprints)
A talented sprinter from the state of Minnesota, I'Tianna Salaam joins the Gophers with quality times at the high school level. Salaam brings in personal bests of 12.18 in the 100m, 25.60 in the 200m and 57.94 in the 400m. Out of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Salaam was a top five finisher for De LaSalle High School in Minneapolis at the Minnesota high school state championships.

Diarra Sow, Horsham, United Kingdom, College of Richard Collyer (Horizontal Jumps)
Making the trip from Europe to the United State to join the Gophers is Diarra Sow out of the United Kingdom. An outstanding jumper out of Horsham, United Kingdom, Sow joins the Maroon and Gold with some serious credentials. She was the Italian U18 Championship Triple Jump Champion and earned a runner-up finish at the U20 Italian meet. Sow brings in a personal best mark in the triple Jump of 13.08m (42-11).
Coach Ibrahim Kabia on Sow: "We are extremely excited about Diarra joining our program as she adds great depth to our horizontal jumps group. Diarra was born in Senegal but spent most of her childhood in Italy before her family eventually moved to the UK in the fall of 2018. She has experience competing at high level meets Italy and we expect Diarra to be a major contributor for our program. We can't wait to begin working with her."
Hadley Streit, Saint Paul, Minn., Mounds View High School (Throws)
Remaining home to dawn the Maroon and Gold is Hadley Streit of Mounds View High School. The Minnesota state champion in the shot put in 2021, Streit brings in a clutch gene to the Gophers throws group. She tossed a personal record throw to win the meet, a toss of over 41 feet. Streit was also a two-sport athlete, competing in volleyball.
Coach Peter Miller on Streit: Hadley is an athlete I have had my eye on for a very long time. She has attended our summer camp for many years, and every year has come back better. She comes from a great Gopher family, as her brother Austin runs for the men's team and I believe she is the 5th generation of her family to attend the University of Minnesota. Hadley is an incredible student, and a fierce competitor. I can't wait to welcome her into the throws group and see her challenge everyone on the team to do great things.
Griffin Ward, Middleton, Wis., Middleton High School (Distance)
Also joining the Golden Gophers from the state of Wisconsin is Griffin Ward out of Middleton High School. Ward brings potential to Minnesota's distance group, and also brings in a talent of alpine skiing to the Gophers' roster as he is a three-time varsity letterwinner in the sport in high school. He brings in personal bests of 4:20 in the 1600m and 9:30 in the 3200m and earned a fourth-place finish at the cross country state championships.
Coach Brad Wick on Ward: "Griffin is a raw talent who has really come on this fall season and will continue to make huge improvements. He's a great team guy and a real competitor."
Dan VanAcker, Scandia, Minn., Forest Lake High School (Distance)
Staying home in Minnesota is Forest Lake's Dan VanAcker. A quality distance runner, VanAcker brings in personal best times of 4:26 in the 1600m and 9:26 in the 3200m during his prep career. VanAcker was a third-place finisher at the state cross country meet, tying his high school's best individual finisher in school history.
Coach Brad Wick on VanAcker: "Dan is a gritty all around athlete and is just now finding his true running potential. He was the top senior in the state this fall which will translate into a big track season this spring."
Ali Weimer, Saint Michael, Minn., Saint Michael-Albertville High School (Distance)
Minnesota kept another talented Minnesotan home in the form of Ali Weimer out of Saint Michael, Minn. The 2021 Minnesota State Champion in cross country, Weimer brings in outstanding times of 17:03 in the 5K along with a 4:49.93 in the 1600m on the track and a 10:21.41 in the 3200m. Weimer has placed among the top 10 finishers at every state meet going back to her eighth grade season and her times this past season were the fastest by any individual in the state of Minnesota in 2021.
Coach Sarah Hopkins on Weimer: "Continuing the theme of top Minnesota runners committing to the gophers, Ali has been one of the best runners in Minnesota her whole high school career, but the last 12 months she has taken her running to a whole new level. One of the best recruits in the country, we could not be more excited that Ali is staying home to rep the maroon and gold!"

The 2021 Minnesota State Champion in cross country, Weimer brings in outstanding times of 17:03 in the 5K along with a 4:49.93 in the 1600m on the track and a 10:21.41 in the 3200m. Weimer has placed among the top 10 finishers at every state meet going back to her eighth grade season and her times this past season were the fastest by any individual in the state of Minnesota in 2021.
Coach Sarah Hopkins on Weimer: "Continuing the theme of top Minnesota runners committing to the gophers, Ali has been one of the best runners in Minnesota her whole high school career, but the last 12 months she has taken her running to a whole new level. One of the best recruits in the country, we could not be more excited that Ali is staying home to rep the maroon and gold!"
