University of Minnesota senior guard Payton Willis was named Big Ten's Co Player of the Week, announced today by the conference office. It is his first Big Ten honor of his career and first for the Golden Gophers this season.

Hailing from Fayetteville, Ark., Willis added a team-best 19.5 points per game as he guided Minnesota to a pair of back-to-back road wins against two Power-5 teams. He also provided 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in Minnesota's two road victories. Willis went 14-of-28 overall and 7-of-16 from three this week, shooting 50 and 43.8 percent, respectively.

Against the Pitt Panthers, Willis added 15 points as one of two players in double digits. The win against Pitt marked Minnesota's first road win since Feb. 23, 2020. In Sunday's matinee against Mississippi State, Willis scored a team-high 24 points, including five points within the final 18 seconds to solidify the win. With the game tied at 76-76, Willis drained his fourth three of the game and eighth field goal when he hit a crucial three-pointer to put the Gophers up, 79-76. He followed by putting the game at two-possessions, sinking two free-throws for the 81-76 final. The back-to-back road wins were the first for the Gophers since 2017. It was also the first true road win against an SEC team since 1999.

The Golden Gophers open Big Ten play Wednesday night when No. 19 Michigan State comes to town. Game time is set for 8 p.m., and televised on Big Ten Network.
