Micheaux Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's forward Alanna Micheaux has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the first time, the conference announced Monday.

The Wayne, Mich., native dropped 23 points, snagged seven rebounds and shot 8-of-10 from the floor in the Maroon and Gold's defeat against UNC in the B1G/ACC Challenge last week.

Micheaux's breakout game against UNC (12/1/21) was the most points by a non-starter for the Golden Gophers since Gadvia Hubbard scored 28 points off the bench against Maryland back in 2017. Her scoring average this season has skyrocketed, after scoring just 2.2 points per game in her first five games she has scored an average of 11.0 points per game in her last four games.

Leading the bench recently, Micheaux and the Gopher reserves have scored a combined 93 bench points over the past two games with 29 of those coming from Micheaux. The rookie's stellar 8-of-10 shooting effort is of note as the Tar Heels entered the Dec. 1, matchup with the second best field goal percentage in the country and the fourth-best scoring defense.

The honor for Micheaux is the first for the Gophers since Jasmine Powell in the 2019-20 season. That season Powell won the award twice during the season while Sara Scalia also getting the distinction twice in that same season.

On the season Micheaux is averaging 6.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and is shooting a staggering 75.9 percent from the floor and 78.6 percent from the free throw line. Micheaux's 75.9 percent shooting from the floor is the best on the team (min. 3 attempts per game).
