The University of Minnesota women's golf team welcomes five newcomers to the team for the 2021-22 season. GopherSports.com will sit down with each of them to get to know them better as they compete in their first season in the Maroon and Gold.
Next up, it is Marta Perez. Perez is a native of Madrid, Spain and attended IES Ortega y Gasset school. As part of her successful career, she competed as a member of Team Madrid at the Spanish Championships where she placed first. Perez also has secured titles at both the Madrid U16 and U18 Championships. At the WAGR Capa Siero and WAGR Ladies Golf Tech Tour, she also took top honors.
GopherSports: How long have you been playing golf and who introduced you to the sport?
Marta Perez: I started playing golf when I was 9 years old and the main reason was my father. He totally introduced me to this sport because he loved to go and play on the weekends, so at the beginning he left me teaching and playing with my friends while he played on the course. Little by little I improved and I realized that the feeling of satisfaction after a good round or a good tournament surpasses any previous effort or sacrifice.
GS: When did you realize you'd like to play collegiate golf?
MP: In Spain we do not have the level of collegiate golf that we have in America. That's why it has always seemed to me something amazing and a dream that I wanted to be part of without any doubt.
GS: What drew you to play for the University of Minnesota?
MP: I was very impressed with the Minnesota golf program because of all the resources offered to the athletes and the high level of academics, so I finally made my decision to continue my studies and golf here!
GS: How has your experience with the Gophers been so far?
MP: The Gophers are a family and I felt very welcome from the first moment I arrived. They are very welcoming and especially for international people this is important because you are far away from your home and you need people to welcome you and include you.
GS: What would you say is the strongest part of your game and what is one thing you'd like to improve upon?
MP: I think the strongest part of my game is the drive. Luckily I am able to hit fairways regularly and this makes me very confident with this club and very comfortable. The irons have always been my weakest point and I am working to improve this part of my game.
GS: Is there anything you hope to achieve while playing for the Gophers?
MP: I would love to be able to contribute as much as possible to my team to achieve great goals. I believe that we are capable of winning big tournaments because individually we are very good players and I believe that if we are able to combine and put together all that we have as individuals to the team we can achieve many and big things. I also personally have another objective and that is that I would like to be remembered as a player with a great attitude, hardworking and who does everything possible to help and push her teammates to do their best.
GS: What has been your impression of the John W. Mooty Practice Facility?
MP: We are very lucky to have a resource such as the Mooty Practice Facility and we must be aware of the privilege of being able to continue training when the weather is bad. It is an incredible facility!
