The No. 3/4 Golden Gophers square off against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs this Friday and Saturday at Ridder Arena to close out the first half of the schedule.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 3/4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team is set to take on Minnesota Duluth for the second time this season to close out the 2021 portion of the schedule this weekend. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. CT on Friday and 3:30 p.m. CT on Saturday at Ridder Arena.

Last Time Out: Gophers Victorious in Madison
The Gophers (13-4-1) played their best series so far this season, taking five-of-six possible points against Wisconsin in Madison. On Friday, the Gophers handed the top-ranked Badgers their first loss of the season, marking their first win at LaBahn Arena since 2018. Three different seniors scored in the 3-2 victory - Taylor Heise, Emily Oden, and Catie Skaja. Minnesota got off to its quickest start of this season when Heise scored 27 seconds into Friday's contest. Lauren Bench stopped 31 shots to become the first goaltender to defeat the Badgers this season. On Saturday, the Gophers earned their first tie of the season, as 65 minutes were not enough to break the 2-2 deadlock. Minnesota picked up the extra point after Emily Zumwinkle scored the shootout winner in the ninth round. Freshmen Peyton Hemp and Emily Zumwinkle each scored for the Gophers, while Lauren Bench stopped 37 shots to finish the series with a Minnesota career-high 68 saves. Peyton Hemp (1g-1a) and Emily Oden (1g-1a) were the only Gophers to finish the series with multiple points.

Scouting UMD
Minnesota Duluth (8-6-0) is coming off of a series-split with No. 2 Ohio State at Amsoil Arena. The Bulldogs took Friday's contest 5-2, but fell on Saturday by a score of 6-2. After the first meeting between Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth, the Bulldogs have gone 6-4-0 with wins over St. Thomas (2x), Bemidji State (2x), St. Lawrence, and Ohio State. The Bulldogs are fueled by their top line of forwards, who each rank in the top-11 in the nation in points-per-game. Senior Gabbie Hughes leads the way as her 1.93 points-per-game are good for tops in the country.

Starting Off Hot
Through 18 games so far this season, Minnesota has got on the scoresheet first in all, but two games. The last time the Gophers were scored on first to open a contest was Oct. 22 at Colgate. The Maroon and Gold are 12-3-1 in games where they find the back of the net first and 1-1-0 in games where the opponent does. Senior forward Taylor Heise leads the team with six opening goals this season, including two goals inside the opening 40 seconds.

Gophers Racking Up Honors
The Gophers closed out the month of November with two players recognized for their exceptional play. Taylor Heise was not only named WCHA forward of the month, but she was tabbed as HCA national player of the month for the first time in her career. Freshman forward Peyton Hemp earned her second consecutive WCHA rookie of the month honor, becoming the only Gopher freshman to ever earn the award two months in a row. Following this past weekend's series in Madison, Lauren Bench earned her fourth career WCHA goaltender of the week award with Minnesota and Emily Zumwinkle took home her first honor as she was tabbed WCHA rookie of the week.

Teddy Bear Toss
On Saturday, the Gophers are hosting their annual teddy bear toss. Bring in a new teddy bear to donate and receive free admission to Saturday's game. The toss will take place during the first intermission.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Senior Taylor Heise is Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 125 career points (52g-73a) in 113 career games. Redshirt senior Amy Potomak (39g-46a) is closing in on 90 career points and 40 career goals. Fifth-year Emily Brown (18g-60a) and senior Emily Oden (25g-54a) are approaching 80 career points.
