Gophers Take Match 1 Over Penn State

The No. 5 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over No. 8 Penn State, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers move to 7-0 overall and in Big Ten play.
Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers with 23 kill and contributed 11 digs. Regan Pittman produced 10 kills and hit .421. In the fourth set alone, she had four kills in four attempts and five blocks. Taylor Landfair and Adanna Rollins each had 11 kills, while CC McGraw had 19 kills and eight assists. Melani Shaffmaster had a match-high 49 assists, six kills and 17 digs.

-Minnesota garnered its second-straight win over Penn State. The Nittany Lions now hold a 13-48 all-time series lead over the Gophers.Â
-After Minnesota had just three blocks in the first three sets, the Gophers contributed eight in the fourth and deciding set. In addition, Pittman went 4-for-4 on her kills, while Samedy had five in six attempts and hit .833.Â

Set Breakdown
Set 1: After 11 tie scores and four lead changes, Minnesota took the first set, 29-27. Minnesota opened the first set with a 9-4 lead off an ace by Rollins, which forced the Nittany Lions to call a timeout. Minnesota held a 15-11 lead, but PSU went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 15-15 as the Gophers called a timeout. Penn State took a 21-19 lead off an ace, which forced the Gophers to call its second timeout of the set. Minnesota came out of the break and tied the set at 21-21 on a Samedy kill. Minnesota took a 23-22 lead off an ace from Kilkelly as PSU called its second timeout. The Nittany Lions fought off five set points, but the Gophers earned a 1-0 win with back-to-back attack errors. Samedy had seven kills in the first set and hit .455.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .386 in the second to take a 25-23 win. Minnesota built a 14-11 lead, but PSU went on a 4-0 run for a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. PSU went up, 18-15 off three-straight kills and forced Minnesota to call a timeout. Minnesota responded with three-straight and tie the set at 18 on a Samedy kill. PSU went up, 21-19, but Minnesota came back to tie the set at 21 off a pair of kills from Samedy and Pittman, which forced Penn State to call a timeout. The Gophers went on a 4-2 run at the end of the set, capped off by a Landfair kill to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Minnesota built a 15-12 lead at the media timeout on a kill from Landfair. PSU came out of the media timeout and tied the set at 15 on a pair of Gopher attack errors. Leading 20-17, the Nittany Lions came roaring back and 6-0 run and a 23-20 lead as Minnesota called its second timeout of the run. The Gophers responded and got a side out off a Rollins kill and cut the PSU lead to one on another kill as Penn State called a timeout. However, PSU added kills to end the set, 25-23 and cut Minnesota's match lead to 2-1.
Set 4: Minnesota produced eight blocks in the fourth set to solidify the win. Minnesota took a 7-5 lead off back-to-back Gopher blocks. A kill by Landfair put the Gophers up, 15-11 at the media timeout and another kill at 17-14. Minnesota went up 20-17 on a block from Rollins and Pittman, which forced PSU to call a timeout. Pittman closed out the match with back-to-back kills at 21-18 and 22-18, while had two solo blocks at 24-18 and 25-18.
