MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior golfer Angus Flanagan made his PGA Tour debut this summer at the 3M Open in Minnesota. Monday, he claimed his spot in his second PGA Tour event in dramatic fashion.
Competing at the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Flanagan birdied the third hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat out a field of six other collegiate golfers and earn an exemption into The Genesis Invitational, which starts Thursday at the same venue.
Flanagan was leading or tied for the lead for much of the day.
On the back nine, he found himself tied at 1-under par with Oakland's Kyle Petrovich and San Francisco's Tim Widing, only to fall back to even-par and trail both Petrovich and Widing. However, the leaders came back to Flanagan and he advanced along with Widing to a sudden-death playoff after both shot an even-par 71.
Both golfers recorded a par on the first and second playoff holes. On what ended up being the final playoff hole, Flanagan buried a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 3 to claim his spot against in this weekend's competition.
It'll be a star-studded field that Flanagan joins as seven of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking have been announced as participating. Among the notables scheduled to compete are Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler.
Action at the 95th Genesis Invitational begins Thursday morning with Golf Channel and CBS providing coverage throughout the weekend.
