Gophers Earn 6-3 Win Over Rutgers

The University of Minnesota softball team scored three runs in the fifth and another three in the seventh to solidify a 6-4 win over Rutgers, today in Leesburg, Fla. With the win, the Gophers won all three against the Scarlet Knights this week and improve to 6-3 overall.

Natalie DenHartog went 3-4 with an RBI, while MaKenna Partain was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Emily Hansen was also 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Amber Fiser picked up her third win of the season and is now 3-2 overall. Autumn Pease added her second save of the year.

The Gophers play Michigan State tomorrow in a doubleheader, which is slated to begin at 3:15 p.m. CT.

Scoring Recap
Rutgers got on the board when the Scarlet Knights scored a run off a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth.

Minnesota responded with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Sydney Strelow added a leadoff triple, while Partain added another triple to score Strelow. Ellee Jensen added a sac fly to score Partain for a 2-1 lead. Hansen added her second double of the day when she plated Kemmetmueller after she walked.

Rutgers cut the Gopher lead to one when it scored off a groundout, however, Minnesota scored another three runs in the seventh. Sara Kinch doubled to start the seventh, while Partain was intentionally walked and Jensen reached on a fielding error. Kemmetmueller added a single to score Kinch, while a sacrifice fly by Hansen scores Partain. DenHartog doubled down the left field line and scored Jensen, which gave the Gophers a 6-2 lead.

Rutgers attempted a comeback and plated two in the bottom of the seventh. The Scarlet Knights added back-to-back singles before it knocked in a run with a another single to left field. Autumn Pease came in the game in relief as the Gophers got two quick outs. Rutgers, however, scored another run off a bases loaded walk. The Gophers, however, closed the game out with a fly out to right to end the Rutgers threat.
