Minnesota Journeys to Illinois for Top-25 Matchup

The No. 7 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team hits the road this weekend to take on Illinois on Saturday, March 13th. The action kicks off from Huff Hall at 1:00pm with broadcast coverage provided by BTN+. 

Last Time Out
Minnesota Women's gymnastics team beat Nebraska by a final score of 197.400 - 196.150. Freshman Mya Hooten recorded the first perfect 10 on floor in Gophers program history. The Woodbury, Minn native led Minnesota to a 49.575 team score on the event, which tied the program record.

Minnesota's all-arounders shined in the victory. Ramler won her sixth straight title and tied for the second best score in program history with a 39.725. She earned the event title on bars (9.975) and beam (9.975). Loper was close behind in second place with a 39.525, highlighted by a 9.950 floor routine.

Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota comes in at No. 7 overall after being ranked No. 5 last week. The Maroon and Gold is ranked fifth on vault, eighth on bars and 12th on beam and seventh on floor. 

Ramler is ranked in the top-20 in the all-around (3), on vault (4), bars (2), beam (T-2) and floor (T-20). Loper continues to be nationally ranked tied for No. 2 on vault, tied for No. 6 on floor and No. 11 in the all-around. Mya Hooten is ranked No. 5 in the nation on floor, Maddie Quarles ties for No. 11 in the country on vault and Mary Korlin-Downs is tied for 23rd on beam.

Record Setting Gophers
In their first meet of the season, Minnesota posted their best opening meet team score with a 197.025. This beat the record set last year at Denver when the Gophers recorded 196.475 points.

The Gophers tied their second highest program team score of 197.625 on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Rutgers. 

Following the first week of competition, Minnesota earned a No. 4 national ranking which tied for the highest in program history.

At the Big Five Meet, the Gophers set a new program record on bars, scoring a 49.575 team score on the event to eclipse the previous record of 49.525 set on February 15, 2019.

On March 5th, Minnesota tied the program high on floor by scoring a 49.575 as a team on the event. Freshman Mya Hooten recorded the first perfect 10 on floor in Gophers program history.

B1G Weekly Awards
Two Gopher gymnasts were honored for their stellar performances on Friday night against Nebraska. Mya Hooten was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Lexy Ramler earned her third straight Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award. This is Hooten's third B1G Freshman of the Week award. Ramler's award is her fourth of the season and 17th in her career.

Scouting Illinois
Fighting Illini women's gymnastics fell to Iowa last weekend. Illinois put up a 196.225 on Saturday afternoon. They started the day on bars where they put up a 49.075 to take a slight lead over Iowa. Olivia O'Donnell scored a 9.90, tying her career-high and winning the bars title. On floor, Illinois scored a 49.125 with Biondi, Mueller and Townes all putting up 9.825.  The Orange and Blue finished the meet on beam, scoring another 49.125.  Nicole Biondi matched her career high 9.875. Her 39.325 in the all-around was good enough to beat out JerQuavia Henderson.

Illinois is ranked in the top 25 nationally in three events. They are 15th on beam and 19th on bars and floor. On vault they are ranked No. 29. Mia Takekawa is ranked 29th nationally on beam with a season high 9.925 and NQS of 9.906. She is ranked seventh in the region and tied for sixth in the Big Ten.
