Boman's First Career Goal Powers Minnesota Past Iowa

3/14/2021 2:36:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Soccer team delivered their third win in four games on Sunday afternoon by defeating Iowa on the road, 1-0. With the victory, the Gophers are now 3-1-2 on the season and sit in sole possession of third place in the Big Ten Conference standings.

For the first 45 minutes of play, both teams were held scoreless as the game went to half at 0-0. Through the first half, Minnesota commanded advantages in shots (six to four), shots on goal (three to one) and corners (four to one).

Then, in the 69th minute, the Maroon & Gold broke through and took the lead on Sophia Boman's first collegiate goal. Boman unleashed an excellent shot from outside the 18-yard box, sneaking the ball past the Iowa goalkeeper and into the upper-90 of the net to put Minnesota ahead, 1-0.

For the entirety of the second half, the Gopher defense performed admirably, highlighted by another standout performance by Megan Plaschko in goal. Coming off of Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors, Plaschko produced her third shutout of the season in just four starts, making five saves on the day. Plaschko has now allowed just one goal through over 496 minutes of play this season.

By the end of the game, Minnesota owned an edge in shots (12 to eight), shots on goal (seven to five) and corner kicks (four to one).

Boman paced all Gophers with four shots, while Makenzie Langdok was the only other Gopher to register multiple shots with two. McKenna Buisman, Boman, Megan Gray, Sadie Harper, Katie Koker and Langdok all put shots on goal in the contest.

Boman, Katie Duong, Koker, Athena Kuehn, Plaschko and Delaney Stekr each started and played all 90 minutes for Minnesota in the victory.

With Sunday's win, Minnesota is now 3-0-1 over their previous four games dating back to March 1.

Quotable
"It was great to be back outside on a grass field and we are tremendously proud of our women's effort today," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "Games don't always settle in the way you want, and when you find a way to win when things are tough, it says a lot about a team. Boman had a fantastic finish and several players battled their way through a tough game. This team fights for one another and lifts each other up, and we are very happy with the win today."

"It's really nice to see the team's hard work pay off and I was so happy to help the team get three points this weekend," Boman said. "I think the energy of the team has been really high. I also think playing together in games has allowed us to really gel together."

Up Next
Minnesota's next game will come in the form of a road contest at Penn State this upcoming Thursday, March 18. The game will air on BTN at 4:30 p.m. CT.
