MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota senior Grace Zumwinkle joins six Golden Gopher alumnae among the 25 players selected to represent the U.S. Women's National Team at the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship, USA Hockey announced Tuesday. The world championship is scheduled for May 6-16 in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.
Named a Second Team All-American and Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award top-three finalist this season, Zumwinkle was also selected for the U.S. world championship team a year ago before the 2020 IIHF Women's World Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Excelsior, Minn., native is a two-time gold medalist with the U.S. Under-18 Team at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships in 2017 and 2016.
Zumwinkle joins Minnesota alumnae and Team USA Olympians Megan Bozek (silver in 2014), Hannah Brandt (gold in 2018), Dani Cameranesi (gold in 2018), Amanda Kessel (gold in 2018, silver in 2014.), Kelly Pannek (gold in 2018), and Lee Stecklein (gold in 2018, silver in 2014) to make up the Gopher players on the U.S. roster.
"It was exciting to be back on the ice with the U.S. Women's National Team," Zumwinkle said. "I am super excited and honored to be selected to represent the U.S. at the IIHF World Championships coming up in May."
Along with the seven players with ties to the University of Minnesota, three staff members serving the U.S. Women's National Team are Gophers. Minnesota associate head coach Joel Johnson will serve as an assistant coach while Minnesota associate director of athletic performance Cal Dietz will serve as Team USA's strength and conditioning head coach and Gopher equipment manager Brent Proulx will serve the U.S. Women's National Team in the same capacity.
The U.S. will conduct a training camp in Portland, Maine, from April 16-23 in preparation for the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship. The camp will be closed to the public.
The U.S. has won the last five IIHF Women's World Championships and captured the top prize a total of nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019), including eight of the last nine tournaments. Team USA is 77-5-6-8-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) in 97 total games all-time in the IIHF Women's World Championship.
