Gophers Take Game 2 Over Northwestern

The University of Minnesota added its second win of the weekend when it defeated No. 21 Northwestern, 6-2, today in Evanston, Ill. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 17-5, while the Wildcats drop to 18-4 this season.
MaKenna Partain went 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs, a walk and two runs scored. Katelyn Kemmetmueller went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Emily Hansen was 3-4 with three RBIs. Overall, Minnesota had nine hits, including two extra-base.
Autumn Pease collected the win and moved to 8-1 this season. She pitched six innings, allowed two earned runs, eight strikeouts and threw 100 pitches. Ava Dueck pitched one inning and threw seven pitches.
Minnesota scored two runs in both the first and the second innings to take the early lead. Hansen plated two when she singled to right field. She scored both Partain and Kemmetmueller, who opened the game with a walk and single.
Partain delivered her second home run in as many games to make it 4-0. Ellee Jensen singled before Partain parked one over the left-field fence for the early lead. Northwestern responded with two runs in the bottom of the second off a two-run home run to cut Minnesota's lead back to two.
Kemmetmueller gave the Gophers a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to score Jensen. Minnesota's final blow came in the top of seventh when Hansen tripled, which scored Natalie DenHartog.
The two runs in the second inning were all that the Wildcats could muster. Despite the Wildcats getting a leadoff hit in the seventh, the Gophers provided a crucial double play as Dueck closed out the game with a strikeout.
Schedule Change – Minnesota's game Saturday game has been pushed to Sunday due to inclement weather. A doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m., with the first game televised on Big Ten Network.
