Gophers Fall to Iowa in Season Finale

4/11/2021 3:26:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota soccer team concluded the spring 2021 season on Sunday afternoon after falling to Iowa, 2-0, in the Big Ten Regional Weekend west finale hosted in Champaign, Ill.

With the loss, Minnesota finishes the season at 5-4-3.

The majority of the action took place inside the first seven-plus minutes of play, as the Hawkeyes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Meike Ingles scored in the first minute to make it a 1-0 game, before Samatha Tawharu extended the Hawkeye lead with a goal of her own in the seventh minute.

Despite falling behind early, the Gophers battled throughout the duration of the game. Although Minnesota went into halftime with a 5-2 disadvantage in the shot department, the team would later bounce back to control the vast majority of offensive chances in the second half. The two programs also produced an even two corner kicks apiece in the first 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, Minnesota attempted to flip the script by applying a steady dosage of pressure on the offensive end. The Gophers outshot the Hawkeyes by a 7-0 margin in the second half, forcing Iowa goalkeeper Macy Enneking to make three saves. The Maroon & Gold also produced four corner kicks in the second half.

By the end of the game, Minnesota commanded firm advantages in shots (9-5), shots on goal (4-2) and corners (6-4), but were unable to break through for a goal.

Sophia Boman paced all Gophers with three shots including one on goal. McKenna Buisman and Makenzie Langdok each registered two shots as well, with Buisman putting one on target. Alana Dressely and Megan Gray also put one shot on goal apiece on Sunday.

Boman, Katie Duong, Katie Koker, Athena Kuehn and Delaney Stekr each started and played all 90 minutes for Minnesota.

Notable
After outshooting Iowa by a 9-5 margin in the season finale, Minnesota finishes the campaign having outshot their opponents in 11 of 12 games and holding a 166-70 edge in shots on the season.

Quotable
"Not the way we wanted to end, but we love this group of women," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "They have grown a lot through an incredible year and a half of adversity from a rough 2019 season, through the COVID pandemic, and they battled extremely hard all year. We took a step forward as a group this year and it was unfortunate it ended this way for this group. We look forward to the 2021 season."

Up Next
Sunday's loss marks the end of the spring 2021 campaign for Minnesota. The Gophers will next compete this upcoming fall as part of the regularly scheduled fall 2021 slate.
