MINNEAPOLIS – Redshirt sophomore left-handed pitcher Jack Liffrig has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week following his standout performance on the mound against No. 25 Michigan this past Saturday.
Starting game two of a three-game series against Michigan, Liffrig fired seven shutout innings against the Big Ten's only nationally-ranked team, scattering just two hits and one walk while striking out a career-high eight batters. Liffrig's seven innings pitched also tied his previous career best.
Liffrig was throwing a one-hitter through his first five innings of work on Saturday, ultimately allowing two total hits across his seven innings of work. Although the southpaw did not earn the win, the performance lowered Liffrig's season ERA to 4.24 across 40 1/3 innings pitched. Liffrig has now pitched five or more innings in all seven of his starts this year, allowing three earned runs or fewer in five of his last six outings.
Tuesday's honor marks Liffrig's first-ever Big Ten weekly accolade and he is the first Gopher hurler to collect Pitcher of the Week honors since Max Meyer accomplished the feat on March 2, 2020.
Liffrig's next scheduled start will take place on the road this upcoming weekend, as the Gophers travel to Indiana for a three-game series from April 23-25.
