Minnesota finishes 11th at conference tournament
The University of Minnesota women's golf team shot 306 (+18) in the final round of the three-day, 54-hole Big Ten Championships in Maineville, Ohio. Their total team score of 901 (+37) placed them 11th in the tournament that was contested at the par 72 TPC River's Bend course.
The Gophers started their last round of the season on the back nine, as was also the case in the second round on Saturday. In the final round, Minnesota was led by sophomore Grace Curran, who carded a two-over 74. She shot a 76 in the first round before recording an even-par 72 in the second round. The Illinois native led the Gophers at the event and finished tied for 24th (+6, 222).
Curran carded five pars and two birdies on her first nine holes as she made the turn at an even-par 36. She also had five pars and two birdies on the back nine (her first nine holes) yesterday. The 74 on Sunday was her fifth best score of the season.
Minnesota's next leading scorers on the partly cloudy day were sophomore Annabelle Ackroyd and senior Grace Kellar, who each shot 77 (+5) on the Arnold Palmer designed course.
Ackroyd played a consistent first nine, giving up only one stroke on the opening hole (No. 10) before rattling off 10 straight pars. Her final-round 77 came after rounds of 75-76 and resulted in a tie for 48th.
Kellar also saw her best play of the day on her first nine, where she carded a birdie on No. 4 and made the turn at 38. She gave three shots back coming home to shoot a 39. Kellar's three-day total of 76-73-77--226 placed the Edina, Minn., resident in a tie for 41st.
Joanne Free, Emma Carpenter, and Jessica Lee rounded out the Minnesota lineup with a 78 and two 81s, respectively. Free and Carpenter each recorded two birdies, while Lee had one. Free, who shot 71 (-1) yesterday finished tied for 48th with Ackroyd, while Carpenter came in 60th and Lee 73rd.
Michigan State won the tournament with an 853 (-11). The Gophers finished ahead of Rutgers (12th) and Indiana (13th).
