Kinch Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

University of Minnesota catcher Sara Kinch was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced today by the conference office. This is Kinch's third freshman of the week award this season and Minnesota's fifth weekly award this season.
Hailing from Temecula, Calif., Kinch compiled a .429 batting average and a .857 slugging percentage in the series win over Penn State last weekend. Kinch also held a .429 on-base percentage when she hit two home runs and two runs scored. Having a hit in all four games of the series, Kinch homered in last Friday's 4-0 win and the Saturday's 10-0 shutout. As the Gophers' starting catcher, Kinch also had 18 putouts, six assists and threw out one batter during a steal attempt.
The No. 24 Gophers begin the second season Friday when they travel to Los Angeles to compete in the NCAA Tournament. Minnesota plays Fresno State, Friday at 7 p.m. The game is televised at 7 p.m. In a double-elimination tournament, Minnesota will also play Saturday. Time is and broadcast information is determined based on Friday's outcome.
