MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan shot a 1-over 73 for the second straight round as play wrapped up Wednesday at the Noblesville Regional at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Flanagan ended his tournament run in a four-way tie for 38th with a 4-over-par 220. However, it wasn't enough to send Flanagan on to the NCAA Championships. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams advanced to the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 28 to June 2.
The low individual that advanced was Purdue's Cole Bradley, who took medalist honors with a 10-under 206, 14 shots better than Flanagan. In addition to Bradley, Texas (20-under), Tennessee (15-under), North Carolina (15-under), Louisville (10-under) and UAB (5-under) also advanced.
For Flanagan, who was competing in his second NCAA postseason event, Wednesday marked his 21st straight top-40 finish. The Woking, England, native had a tough start to his final round, posting bogeys on three of the first four holes. He did have a birdie on No. 2, leaving him 2-over-par through five holes. He birdied No. 6 to get a shot back, but consecutive bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes left him 3-over at the turn.
The back nine was better for Flanagan as he was 2-under. It started with four straight pars before a birdie on No. 14. A bogey on No. 15 followed, but he finished his day with birdies on two of his final three holes to end 1-over.
Flanagan finishes the season by accumulating 1,517 strokes over 21 rounds, good for a scoring average of 72.24 that ranks 10th all-time at Minnesota. In addition, he finishes the season with a career scoring average of 71.87 that is second in program history behind only James McLean's 71.48.
In addition to the best scoring average on the team this year, Flanagan also led Minnesota in tournaments won (2), tournaments leading the team (5), birdies (73), rounds under par (8), best finish to par (-9), low score for 18 (66) and 54 holes (207), most top-10 finishes (2) and most top-20 finishes (3).
With the 2021 season complete, Minnesota is expected to return at least seven of nine golfers next year. As a senior, Flanagan has the option to use an additional year of eligibility should he choose to do so.
