Flanagan Splits Matches on Opening Day of Walker Cup
5/8/2021 8:06:00 PM | Men's Golf
Competing for Great Britain and Ireland, Flanagan teamed up with Jake Bolton to defeat the United States pairing of Stewart Hagestad and William Mouw, 1 Up, in the foursomes (alternate shot) session. In the afternoon, Flanagan battled until the end but fell to Austin Eckroat, 1 Down, in singles play.
Entering Sunday's final day of competition, the U.S. holds a 7-5 lead over GB&I. One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. As the two-time defending champion, the United States needs 13 points to retain the Cup while Flanagan's squad needs 13.5 points to capture it.
In Saturday morning's foursomes match, neither team won a hole through six before the Americans broke through on No. 7. The score remained that way until No. 11 when a birdie from Flanagan/Bolton evened the match up. After a tie on the par-4 12th, Flanagan/Bolton used back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to go 2 Up. However, the U.S. duo won the next two holes to force a tie with just two holes to play.
A tee shot on the par-3 17th from Bolton was short and left of the hole, with a lie for Flanagan below his feet. His chip shot hit just short of the green but bounced on, about 20 feet or so from the cup. Bolton converted the lengthy par putt to give the duo a 1 Up lead with one hole to play. Both teams then recorded pars on No. 18, giving the victory to GB&I.
From earlier Saturday at the #WalkerCup: Tied through 16 holes in Foursomes play, @AngusFlanagan hit this incredible chip shot off a sand dune at No. 17 and his partner, Jake Bolton, sinks the long putt to put the duo ahead in a 1 Up victory!#CommitNorth | #Gophers pic.twitter.com/53Ob3IImKp

In the afternoon, Flanagan went up against Eckroat, a senior at Oklahoma State. Eckroat won the first hole before the pair alternated victories the second and third holes. They tied over the next four holes before Flanagan tied up the match at No. 8 with a par to Eckroat's bogey. The OSU golfer responded by winning holes 9 and 10 and then the pair tied the next two holes, leaving Flanagan down two with six to play.
Flanagan showed his resolve though and won the next three holes using a par on No. 13 and consecutive birdies on 14 and 15 to go 1 Up with three holes to play. However, Eckroat claimed holes 16 and 17 and a lengthy putt from Flanagan on No. 18 to extend the match broke just in front of the cup and swung wide.
