Curran and Carpenter both advanced to the match play portion of the tournament

Grace Curran finished first in stroke play at the Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship on Tuesday, June 15 with a 2-under-par 70.

The three- day competition in Mundelein, Ill., features 48 of the best amateur golfers in the state. Curran's 70 advances her to the match play portion of the competition.

Curran, who went to high school only an hour away at Lincoln-Way Central, played consistently on the 6,092 yard, par-72 Pine Meadow Golf Course. Curran, who will be a junior next season, ended the day with 14 pars, three birdies, and one bogey.

Emma Carpenter, who is from Dekalb, Ill., is also participating in the competition. Carpenter tied for ninth place with a 76 (+4). Carpenter's performance in stroke play also put her well above the top-32 cutoff needed to move on to match play. The soon-to-be-junior recorded nine pars, two birdies, and one eagle in stroke play.

Curran and Carpenter won their first match play competition of the tournament as well - both by the scores of 5 and 3 - and will meet in the round of 16 on Wednesday morning.
