The University of Minnesota softball program has announced that Gophers alumna MaKenna Partain will join the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

Partain, a standout infielder for the Gophers from 2017-21, finished her career this past May. She started in 245 career games and scored 222 runs. Her 245 starts ranks fourth in school history, while her 222 runs scored tops the Gopher record books. Partain was named a four-time NFCA Great Lakes Region selection and a three-time First Team All-Big Ten selection. Hailing from Banks, Ore., Partain was also a Senior CLASS finalist and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. In her final season as a Golden Gopher, Partain led Minnesota in batting average (.329), at bats (143), runs (37), hits (47), triples (3) and on-base percentage (.449). She also held a .969 fielding percentage.

"After everything this program has given me in my five years at Minnesota, there is no better way I can think of to give back than to help mold the future of Gopher Softball," Partain said. "I'm excited to be on the other side of the field and watch these women develop into better players and people in their time as Gopher Softball players. Go Gophs!"

Partain graduated from Minnesota in May 2020 with a bachelor's degree in family social science.
