MINNEAPOLIS – Head coach Erin Chastain and the University of Minnesota soccer program unveiled the 2021 season schedule Monday. The schedule features 10 Big Ten matchups, seven non-conference matches and two exhibitions. Dates and opponents are subject to change.
The Gophers will open the 2021 season in August with two exhibition matches as Minnesota will travel to Fargo to take on North Dakota State University and then will welcome St. Thomas to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The Maroon and Gold will then take on seven non-conference foes, welcoming Baylor, Mississippi State, Wyoming, UIC and North Dakota to the Twin Cities. Both Baylor and Mississippi State reached the NCAA Tournament as recent as 2018 with Baylor reaching the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals that year. The matchups with Baylor and Mississippi State are the first meetings with both programs.
During the non-conference season Minnesota will have just two road contests, first will be a trip to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on Drake followed by a meeting in Omaha, Neb., to take on the Mavericks. The matchup with Drake is the first since 2007 with the Gophers holding an all-time record of 3-1-1 against the Bulldogs.
Minnesota opens up Big Ten play on Sept. 18 against Wisconsin at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium and will also welcome a loaded home slate of Rutgers, Penn State, Illinois and Nebraska. During conference play the Gophers will travel to Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern and Iowa.
Another trip to the Big Ten Tournament will be the goal for the Gophers in 2021 with the tournament starting on Oct. 31 with the higher seeds hosting. The final of the conference tournament will be contested on Nov. 7 at a neutral site.
