Landfair, Samedy and Wenaas reached double digit kills once again

MADISON, Wisconsin -- The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team bounced back on Saturday night with a three set takedown of TCU.

The Golden Gophers (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) had three with double-digit kills as Stephanie Samedy (12), Jenna Wenaas (11) and Taylor Landfair (11) all reached double figures once again. Ellie Husemann tallied three kills and tied her career-best with seven block assists, coming up with several key defensive plays throughout the match.

"We just had to take what we learned from yesterday and apply that to our performance on the court tonight," Landfair said. "It felt good to be able to get out there and bounce back as a team."

Minnesota played a dominant first set and cruised to a 25-7 game one victory. The Gophers also led wire-to-wire in set two before seeing some resistance in set three from the Horned Frogs (0-2, 0-0 Big 12). A 6-2 run midway though the third set gave TCU its first lead of any set at 12-11. The 'U' finished the set on a 14-4 run, however, getting five kills from Samedy and a pair from Wenaas to earn a 25-16 third set win.

As a team, Minnesota hit .280, had 41 kills, six aces, 49 digs and 12 blocks. TCU hit .028 with 26 kills, 46 digs, one ace and seven blocks.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota started out hot in set one, getting things rolling immediately with an ace from Jenna Wenaas on the game's first serve. A couple kills from Landfair and an overpass sent home by Shaffmaster put the Gophers up 7-1 and forced TCU to call timeout. Minnesota kept up the pressure after the timeout and went on a 14-3 run to go up 21-4. Four blocks, three more kills from Landfair and two each from Samedy and Wenaas aided in the run. A Samedy ace and a Wenaas kill capped off the first set as the 'U' took home a 25-7 game one victory, hitting .429 and holding the Horned Frogs to -.097.

Set 2: The Gophers quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the back of two kills from Landfair and one from Katie Myers before the Horned Frogs answered with a 3-1 run. The 'U' went up 9-4 before a TCU run cut the game to 13-11. Two straight Shaffmaster attacks helped the Gophers keep the Horned Frogs at bay during the middle of the set. TCU remained close at 15-13 before a Stephanie Samedy-led 4-1 run came with two kills, a service ace and a block assist to put the 'U' up 19-14. TCU would cut the lead to two but would get no closer as a Landfair ace and Samedy kill helped Minnesota wrap it up, 25-19.

Set 3: Both teams went back and forth throughout the first 10 points before two kills from Wenaas and a dual block from her and Myers put Minnesota up 8-5 and forced TCU to call a timeout. A 5-2 TCU run gave the Horned Frogs their first lead of any set tonight before another Wenaas kill halted the run and put her up to 10 on the evening. Minnesota would go on a 10-3 run, led by three block assists from Ellie Husemann and a pair of kills by Samedy. The Gophers closed out the set and the match with a 25-16 win. Samedy sandwiched two more kills around one from Wenaas to help the 'U' seal the deal.

Notable:
-Stephanie Samedy moved up to No. 9 all-time at Minnesota in kills (1,517), passing former All-American Cassie Busse. She's two away from passing Pam Miller for eighth.
-Samedy notched a game-high in kills (12) and finished second on Minnesota in block assists (6).
-Jenna Wenaas (11 kills), tallied her second straight double-digit kill game for the first time in her Gophers career.
-Ellie Husemann tied her career-high with seven block assists to lead all Gophers.
-Taylor Landfair tallied 11 kills, her 15th career match with 10-or-more kills. She also had a career-best eight digs.
