Trio of Gophers Named as Big Ten Preseason Honorees

MINNEAPOLIS – A trio of Gophers were selected as 2021-22 Big Ten Women's Golf Preseason Honorees, announced by the conference on Tuesday. Emma Carpenter, Grace Curran and Joanne Free represented the Maroon and Gold.
Carpenter competed in each of the six tournaments during the spring of 2021. The Dekalb, Ill. native opened the season at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate where she finished tied for 39th. Her top performance of her sophomore campaign came at the Indiana Spring Challenge, finishing 14th overall and shooting par in the third round (76-76-72--224).
Also competing in all six spring tournaments, Curran led the team in average (74.22), top ten finishes (1) and top 20 finishes (3). She was the top finisher for the Gophers and posted a career-low 54-hole score (219) and a career-low final round score (71) at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate. She followed that performance with a career-best finish when she tied for sixth overall at the Florida State Match-Up.
Curran was the winner of the 2021 Illinois State Amateur Championship during the summer.
Free, a native of Gullane, Scotland, earns her second-straight preseason honoree nod. After making her first appearance of the spring at the Florida State Match-Up where she tied for 34th, Free led the Gophers by shooting a 223 (75-73-75) to place T-20 at the Briar's Creek Invitational the following week. She tied for ninth overall (76-74-72--222) and set a career-best finish at the Indiana Spring Challenge before she recorded two birdies and finished the season in 48th at the Big Ten Championship (79-71-78--228, +12).
This summer, Free won the 2021 Minnesota Golf Association Women's Match Play Championship and qualified for the 2021 U.S. Women's Amateur.
