Gophers to Celebrate 100th Season
9/1/2021 9:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
MINNEAPOLIS-- The University of Minnesota men's golf team has unveiled plans to honor the first century of Gopher men's golf with notable initiatives for fans, alumni and all who have helped build the Maroon and Gold into the program it is today.
"We are so fortunate to be able to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of our men's golf program," Justin Smith said. "As head coach of the program as well as a prideful
alum, I am incredibly excited to connect and celebrate the rich history and tradition of our program and all those alumni that paved the way to where we are now. Within our 'Commit North' identity, connecting with our alumni community is vital to our program's success. We will utilize our entire season to connect with our amazing Gopher men's golf alumni and celebrate their time and commitment to our University, athletic department and golf program. I cannot be more excited for what this anniversary will mean to all of us who wore the maroon and gold."
As Minnesota competes in its 100th season during 2021-22, the program will salute the previous ten decades of the historic program along with the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Big Ten Championship and 20th anniversary of the 2002 National Championship. Throughout the centennial season, Minnesota will select and honor the top moments, players and coaches in team history. Fans and supporters can follow along on social media and gophersports.com.
"We are very excited to begin our 100th year of Gopher golf celebration." Matt Rachey said. "Our goal as coaches is to make this the most memorable season yet and celebrate all aspects of our program's history, including current/past players, coaches, fans and championships. Minnesota golf is filled with rich history that dates back to the early 1920's, and it is truly amazing to look back at all of the Gopher alumni that came before us. When Coach Smith and I began our coaching roles a few years back, one of our main goals was to connect with alumni personally and hear their stories. It has been amazing listening to stories from the 1972 Big Ten Championship team, the individual National Championships won by Louis Lick (1944), James McLean (1998) and the 2002 National Championship team to name a few. As a former player here and now a coach, the University of Minnesota golf program is very special to me and I cannot wait to celebrate 100 years with the rest of the Minnesota golf community!"
More promotions and celebrations for the 100th season of Gopher men's golf will be announced throughout the season.
