Tristana Tatur joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from Maple Grove, Minn., and Maple Grove High School.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's hockey team welcomes nine newcomers to the team for the 2021-22 season, including Tristan Tatur, a right-handed freshman forward from Maple Grove, Minn., and Maple Grove High School. Tatur discusses her very athletic family, her strengths and weaknesses on the ice, her dream of playing for the Gophers, and more.

Gopher Sports: How did you first get into hockey?

Tristana Tatur: I first got into hockey from watching my brother when I was three. My dad built an ice rink in my backyard when I was 4 and I started skating then. I have fallen in love with hockey ever since.

GS: What's your earliest hockey memory?

TT: My earliest hockey memory was when I scored my first goal in U10 hockey. It was such an awesome feeling that made me fall in love with playing the game.

GS: When did you realize that playing Division I hockey was a possibility for you?

TT: I remember going to a Gopher game when I was 10 years old with my hockey team. I was determined to play at that level one day.

GS: How did you choose the University of Minnesota?

TT: I chose the University of Minnesota because I wanted to be closer to home and play at a high level with an amazing program.

GS: What's your family like? How did they influence your playing career?

TT: I have one brother, Trent, who played football at UMD. My mom, April, who helped drive me to hockey when I was younger and helped grow my passion for the game. My dad, Jeff, who played football at the University of North Dakota. He taught me what it is like to work hard and never give up on what you want to accomplish in life. They all are super supportive and made me who I am today.

GS: How would your family describe you?

TT: My family would describe me as hard working, caring, and outgoing.

GS: Did you play any other sports growing up?

TT: I played soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, and lacrosse.

GS: What do you like to do in your free time outside of hockey and school?

TT: I enjoy hanging out with my friends, family, and love to be outside.

GS: Is there a hockey player you have admired or looked up?

TT: Growing up I always looked up to Tomas Tatar.

GS: Describe your high school hockey experience?

TT: My high school hockey experience at Maple Grove was a lot of fun. It was awesome playing with my friends every day at the rink. We made it to the state tournament two times when I was on the team and made memories that will last a lifetime.

GS: Do you know what you want to major in and what career field you're interested in?

TT: I will be majoring in Business and Marketing Education. I am excited to learn more about business and marketing and see where it takes me.

GS: What's one part of your game that you're confident in and one part of your game you want to work on more?

TT: I think I am a good playmaker with a really hard shot and can pick the spot on the net I want to hit. I need to work on getting quicker in my first few steps.

GS: Is there anything in particular that stood out to you about the team or the coaches on your visit that solidified your decision to come to the University of Minnesota?

TT: Something that stood out to me was how successful the program is. The coaches are awesome and super supportive. I love how competitive the team is. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
