Gophers Close Out Diet Coke Classic With 3-0 Win

The No. 11 University of Minnesota volleyball team closed out the Diet Coke Classic with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) win over Iowa State, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers (5-3) close out the nonconference portion of the schedule and enter Big Ten play on a four-match win streak. 

Jenna Wenaas led all attackers with 14 kills, followed by Stephanie Samedy with 12. Both also recorded a double double with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Ellie Husemann and Airi Miyabe each had seven kills, while Husemann led the match with six blocks. Katie Myers also posted five. CC McGraw held a match-best 19 digs and Melani Shaffmaster had 35 assists, two aces and 12 digs. As a team, the Gophers hit .206 to Iowa State's .071, and registered 45 kills to the Cyclones' 30. The Gophers also established 63 digs. 

Notable: 
- The duo of Samedy and Wenaas have reached double digit kills a combined 12 times this season.
- Under Hugh McCutcheon, Minnesota is 22-0 in the Diet Coke Classic. They're 57-7 all-time.
- Minnesota is now 25-7 all-time against Iowa State in program history and 2-0 under McCutcheon.

Minnesota begins Big Ten play against Michigan on Friday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. Central time on BTN. The Gophers play Maryland on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Set Breakdown
Set 1: Minnesota rallied from a 5-11 deficit to come back to win the set, 25-17. Trailing early at 5-11, the Gophers called a timeout. From there, Minnesota went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 12-12. The Gophers and Cyclones tied through 15-15 before the Gophers took the lead for good at 16-15 off a Myers kill. Shaffmaster added a kill at 21-17 and delivered back-to-back aces at 23-17 and 24-17, while Wenaas closed out the set with her sixth kill of the match to take a 1-0 lead. Wenaas hit .667 when she capitalized on six of nine attempts. 

Set 2: The Gophers added to its lead with a 25-19 set win. After trading points through 12-12, Minnesota took a 14-12 lead as ISU called a timeout. The Cyclones responded tied the set at 14-14. After the two teams tied through 17-17, Minnesota took a 21-17 lead off an ISU attack error. The Gophers closed out the second on kills from Samedy and Wenaas, with a ISU service error to take a 2-0 lead.  

Set 3: The Gophers Minnesota jumped out to a 4-0 lead off a kill by Husemann, which forced the Cyclones to take an early timeout. Minnesota, however, continued to add to its lead when it took a 12-7 lead off a Samedy/Husemann block. ISU pulled within one at 17-18, but the Gophers had kills by Miyabe and Husemann for a 20-17 lead, and caused a Cyclone timeout. Husemann pushed the set to 23-20, while Kilkelly provided an ace for match point. Wenaas put the final touch on the match with her 14th kill of the night.
