MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's hockey team welcomes nine newcomers to the team for the 2021-22 season, including Ella Huber, a left-handed freshman forward from Northfield, Ill., and the Chicago Mission. Huber shares her connection with Abbey Murphy and Josey Dunne, how she first got into hockey, why she decided to become a Gopher, and more.

Gopher Sports: How did you first get into hockey?

Ella Huber: I first got into hockey because of my two older brothers. I originally started as a figure skater and as soon as I saw how much more fun hockey looked for my brothers, I switched immediately.

GS: What's your earliest hockey memory?

EH: My earliest hockey memory is definitely my first tournament with my local boys team and I remember every moment of it like it was yesterday.

GS: How do you think your early hockey experience shaped your growth in the sport?

EH: My early hockey experience shaped my growth in this sport because it created a love and passion for the sport of hockey that never went away. This love for hockey only grew over the years through all the tournaments and experiences - I couldn't imagine my life without the sport of hockey and everything that it has given me.

GS: When did you realize that playing Division I hockey was a possibility for you?

EH: The summer going into my freshman year of high school was when I realized that playing D1 hockey was a possibility for me.

GS: How did you choose the University of Minnesota?

EH: I chose the University of Minnesota due to the overall culture, campus feel, academics, and coaching staff.

GS: What's your family like? How did they influence your playing career?

EH: I am from a big, rowdy family being one of seven kids with a lot of pets as well. They have influenced my career more than anyone because of the competitive nature within our family and the constant support.

GS: How would your family describe you?

EH: They would describe me as hard-working and happy

GS: Did you play any other sports growing up?

EH: I played lacrosse and soccer competitively as well as a few other sports just for fun.

GS: What is it like going to the same school as your former club hockey teammates Abbey Murphy and Josey Dunne?

EH: I am honestly so excited to go to school with Josey and Murph because I feel like I have a bigger piece of home here in Minnesota.

GS: What was your USA Hockey experience like?

EH: My experience with USA hockey so far has been absolutely amazing and has been something that keeps me motivated every single day. I've had some incredible memories within the program but it definitely makes you work even harder to get more of them.

GS: What do you like to do in your free time outside of hockey and school?

EH: Outside of hockey and school, I enjoy being with my friends and family and being outdoors.

GS: Is there a hockey player you have admired or looked up?

EH: I have always looked up to Jonathon Toews due to my upbringing in Chicago and the overall solid player he is all over the ice.

GS: What was your high school hockey experience like?

EH: My high school hockey experience consisted of playing for the Chicago Mission as my club team and then also playing for my high school on the side for fun.

GS: Do you know what you want to major in and what career field you're interested in?

EH: As for school, I am very undecided. I know I would like to study something most likely in business or science, but I am for sure going to explore a little at first.

GS: What's one part of your game that you're confident in and one part of your game you want to work on more?

EH: On the ice, I am confident with my speed and hockey IQ. Something I would like to work on is the mental side of the game. I sometimes tend to get inside my head or mad at myself and it is 100% something I need to get better at.

GS: Is there anything in particular that stood out to you about the team or the coaches on your visit that solidified your decision to come to the University of Minnesota?

EH: I would say that the welcoming culture within the team and coaches was for sure the most solidifying part of my decision.
