Gophers Open 2021 at Spiked Shoe Invitational

The University men's and women's cross country teams open the 2021 season at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, hosted by Penn State University. Race time is slated for 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. in University Park, Pa., at the PSU Cross Country Course.
WHO'S THERE
The Gophers will travel 12 individuals from the women's side and nine from the men's team in this opening weekend. Minnesota will be joined by Georgetown, Michigan, Ohio State, host Penn State and Syracuse for both men and women.
GOPHERS OPEN SEASON WITH INTRASQUAD
The Golden Gopher men's and women's cross country teams unofficially kicked off the 2021 cross country season hosting an Intrasquad 5K race at Les Bolstad Course Friday evening. The men's and women's teams were split into three teams: Gold, Maroon and Black. Black won the event. The Gold Team was captained by Jaycie Thomsen, Megan Hasz and Abby Kohut-Jackson. The Black Team was captained by Alec Basten and Taylor Krone, while the Maroon Team was captained by Owen Hoeft and Tate Sweeney.
PRESEASON RANKINGS
The Minnesota women's cross country team enters the 2021 fall season as the No. 9 ranked team in the Preseason USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday. The Golden Gophers are one of seven Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason poll and two in the top 10. BYU holds the top ranking, followed by NC State, Stanford, New Mexico and Michigan State. Along with the Spartans and Gophers, the poll also highlights Big Ten's Michigan (11), Indiana (16), Illinois (17), Ohio State (28) and Wisconsin (29) in the rankings. Regional rankings also came out on Monday, which featured Minnesota and Illinois as the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in the Midwest Region. On the men's side, Minnesota is ranked fourth in the Midwest Region.

Both the men's and women's programs will compete in the St. Olaf Invite, Sept. 18 in Northfield, Minn. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
