MINNEAPOLIS - Eight players with Golden Gopher ties are among the 23 players named to the 2022 U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey Team that will represent the United States at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China next month. USA Hockey revealed the members of Team USA during the second intermission of the NHL Winter Classic at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday evening.

Fifth-year Grace Zumwinkle, sophomore Abbey Murphy, and Gopher alumnae Megan Bozek ('13), Hannah Brandt ('16), Dani Cameranesi ('17), Amanda Kessel ('16), Kelly Pannek ('19), and Lee Stecklein ('17) were selected to represent the Red, White, and Blue with Team USA.

Kessel and Stecklein lead the USA Gophers in making their third Olympic Games appearance after earning silver at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and gold in the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Brandt, Cameranesi and Pannek also return to the line-up for the Red, White, and Blue after earning gold in 2018. Bozek makes her return to the Olympic scene after earning silver in 2014. Murphy and Zumwinkle are set to make their Olympic debuts.

Joel Johnson, who served as an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota from 1999-04 and from 2010-2021, will serve as head coach. The 2021-22 U.S. Women's National Team has been centralized in Blaine, Minn. in preparation for the 2018 Olympic Games since October.

Prior to these games, 14 Gophers have competed in the Winter Olympic Games, making 28 Olympic appearances for two different countries. 12 Gophers have represented the U.S. in the Olympics, and two Finnish Gophers, Noora Räty and Mira Jalosuo, have competed for their native Finland. Räty and Jalosuo took home bronze in 2018.

The U.S. Women's Olympic Team has participated in every Winter Olympic Games since the first-ever women's ice hockey tournament in 1998. USA took home Gold at that tournament in Nagano and is looking to defend its gold medal in 2018, in which Team USA defeated Canada 3-2 in a shootout.

Team USA will be competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games from Feb. 3-17, 2022 with 11 other countries. Team USA is competing in Group A alongside Canada, Finland, Russia, and Switzerland and will open the competition Thursday, Feb. 3 against Finland.
