STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is on the road for the second-straight game as the Golden Gophers take on the No. 10 Michigan State Spartans, Wednesday night. Game time is set for 6 p.m., CT and will be televised on Big Ten Network. The last time the Gophers won in East Lansing, Mich., dates back to Feb. 26, 2015 in a 96-90 overtime win over the Spartans.
• The contest marks the second game against the Spartans already in this early Big Ten season. Just five games in, the Gophers will complete their games against the Spartans this regular season. Minnesota fell to Michigan State in the Big Ten opener at home, Dec. 8. Trailing as much as 19 in the second half, the Gophers made a run at the end, but fell 75-67 for their first conference loss of the season in head coach Ben Johnson's first conference game. Eric Curry had a career-high 18 points and Jamison Battle scored 17 points for the Gophers.
• Although head coach Ben Johnson is in his first year as Minnesota's head coach, he's no stranger to the Big Ten. As an assistant coach with Minnesota and Nebraska for six years, Johnson also played at both Northwestern and Minnesota. In fact, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has known coach Johnson since his playing days as a high school player at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis.
• Through 13 games this season, Minnesota ranks third in the league in scoring defense. A veteran group, the Gophers also turn over the ball very few times (120), which ranks second in the league. The Gophers have had five games in which they committed five or fewer turnovers a game, including their last meeting against Michigan State (3).
• Jamison Battle is ranked sixth in Big Ten overall scoring and seventh against Big Ten opponents (18.3). He averages 18.2 points per game, while Payton Willis ranks 12th in the league at 15.8. Battle added a game-high 19 points against Indiana, which marked his 28th straight double-figure scoring game dating back to last season at George Washington. Battle's season high is 27 points (at Michigan), while his career high is 29 (vs. Duquesne). He has scored over 20 points for the Gophers in five games this season.
UP NEXT
• Minnesota returns to Williams Arena confines Sunday, Jan. 16 when the Gophers host the Iowa Hawkeyes at 1 p.m., on Big Ten Network. Mike Grimm and Spencer Tollackson will also provide the radio call on KFAN 100.3.
