MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers track and field team will have student-athletes at both the St. Thomas Invitational (Jan. 14) and the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational (Jan. 15) this weekend. Saturday's action in Chicago, at Gately Park, is the inaugural track and field event at the new 200m banked track that will be host to a number of Big Ten teams.
About the 2022 Wisconsin Midwest Invitational
The Gophers will be a part of the first meet held at the Gately Indoor Track with Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin participating at the meet. About the 2022 St. Thomas Invitational
Minnesota heads to St. Thomas for the first time this season after The Opener at St. Thomas was cancelled back in December. The Golden Gophers will have seven women's entries, primarily in the distance events while 10 unattached men's athletes will compete at the event in the sprints and field events. Field events will begin at 3:30 p.m. with running events starting at 4 p.m. Live results can be followed throughout the meet along with updates on @GopherCCTF on Twitter and Instagram. Fans are able to attend the meet at Anderson Fieldhouse free of charge.
Last Time Out: Minnesota Open
The Golden Gophers earned a combined eight event victories on Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse and earned a number of personal bests along the way. The highlight of the meet for Minnesota was Devia Brown who broke the meet record in the shot put with a mark of 16.34m (53-7 1/2). Brown's mark came on her third attempt of the afternoon, and nearly tossed another meet record throw on her final attempt just minutes later. Freshman Shelby Frank started the party for the throws group earlier in the day in the women's weight throw. The Grand Forks, N.D., native, tossed a new lifetime best of 20.03m (65-8 3/4) to crush her previous best mark of 18.77m (61-7) and move her into the No. 8 spot in program history. Minnesota also had a handful of unattached athletes on the men's side compete on Saturday afternoon. Finn Schirmer posted a lifetime best of 8.08 in the 60m hurdles to take the victory while Mike Herauf eclipsed five meters to win the men's pole vault at 5.01m (16-5 1/4) while Hannah Morris won the women's long jump with a leap of 5.55m (18-2 1/2).
Frank Named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week
University of Minnesota sophomore Shelby Frank has been honored by the Big Ten Conference for her performance at the Minnesota Open. Frank was the runner-up at the Minnesota Open with a lifetime best toss of 20.03m (65-8 3/4). With her throw, Frank moved into eighth in Minnesota history. The Grand Forks, N.D., native improved on her previous PR by nearly two full meters, surpassing the mark of 18.77m (61-7) she set at the Big Ten Indoor Championships back in February. Amongst the rest of the country, Frank is ranked sixth in the nation and No. 2 in the Big Ten this season. Her mark was the longest toss in the country this past weekend.
The Golden Gophers Ranked Nationally
Although it is early in the indoor season, the Golden Gophers have already posted a number of solid marks this indoor season dating back to December at the SDSU Holiday Open. Currently the Gophers have 11 marks ranked inside the nation's top 10, with nine different student-athletes posting them. So far this season sophomore Janielle Josephs owns the top time in the 400m at 54.13, just a third of a second off her lifetime best in the event indoors. Other notable top 10 national marks for the Maroon and Gold include Abby Kohut-Jackson (3000m - 9:10.04), Devia Brown (Shot Put - 16.34m | 53-7 1/2), Shelby Frank (Weight Throw - 20.03m | 65-8 3/4) and Allison Gerads (Pentathlon - 4,037 points).
2020-21 Indoor Track & Field Season Rewind
The Gophers wrapped up the 2020-21 indoor track & field season with 12 different All-America honors with 10 different student-athletes earning either first or second team distinctions. Minnesota's top returning performer is Bethany Hasz who was the NCAA indoor runner-up in the 5000m. The women's program finished the meet in 24th as a team. Returning 2020-21 All-Americans for the Gophers are Amira Young, Allison Gerads, Tess Keyzers, Jayla Campbell, Abigail Schaaffe, Val Larson and Janielle Josephs. On top of the national success, the Gophers also are the reigning Big Ten indoor women's team champions. The women's team returns 11 women's student-athletes that won Big Ten indoor titles last season.

The Gophers will continue their indoor campaign on Jan. 22, at the Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa. The meet's field events start at 12 p.m. while the running events will begin at 1 p.m. at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.
