Gophers Fall Just Short at Michigan State, 74-71

1/23/2022 12:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota (9-11, 2-6 B1G) dropped a 74-71 contest at the Breslin Center against Michigan State (10-8, 4-3 B1G) on Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Sara Scalia led the Golden Gophers with 31 points, her second 30-point performance this season. Deja Winters added 17 while Jasmine Powell handed out nine assists.

After giving up the opening bucket the Gophers scored 11 of the next 17 points to take an 11-8 lead at the first media timeout. Scalia was feeling it from long range early, hitting on three first quarter threes including a transition 30-footer to go up 17-12.

Heading into the second the Gophers held on to a 17-14 lead and the lead grew to as much as seven during the quarter for the Maroon and Gold. Led by three Deja Winters steals in the quarter the Minnesota defense held the Spartans to 33.3 percent from the floor in the quarter. Scalia continued her hot shooting and brought her shooting inside the arc to bring her first half total to 19 points, the second time this season she's scored at least 19 in the first half (21 vs. Ohio).

The Gophers came out of the locker room with a four-point advantage and it was Winters who kept her defensive performance going in the third. She snagged two more steals in the third and helped the Gophers stop the Spartans on five-straight possessions that included a Winters steal, a Bailey Helgren and Scalia block and along with a steal from Jasmine Powell and a jump ball by Laura Bagwell Katalinich. Winters scored eight in the quarter, but a late MSU run made it 54-52 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Down the stretch the game became increasingly tight with neither team leading by more than five during the entire fourth quarter. Nia Clouden scored 12 of the Spartans 22 in the fourth quarter and hit a pair of clutch free throws with 1.5 seconds left to help Michigan State earn a three-point come-from-behind win 74-71.

Minnesota heads back on the road for a contest against Purdue on Thur., Jan. 27. That game can be seen on B1G+ and listened to on KFAN+.
