Winters Scores 17 in Loss at Purdue

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota (9-12, 2-7 B1G) dropped its road test with Purdue (12-7, 4-5 B1G) on Thursday night in West Lafayette. Deja Winters led the way offensively for the Maroon and Gold with 17 points, hitting on 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Jasmine Powell (13) and Sara Scalia (10) both added double figure scoring.
Off the bench Laura Bagwell Katalinich had her best overall game of the season with six points as well as seven rebounds, three offensive, along with two assists and two steals. As a team the Gophers shot 23-of-66 (34.8 percent) and hit on 8-of-22 from three.
After a Kadi Sissoko layup to get things started for Minnesota, Purdue countered with a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take an early lead. The Maroon and Gold continued to claw back, cutting it to 13-9 before Purdue ended the quarter with the final five points and an 18-9 lead after 10 minutes at Mackey Arena.
The second quarter the offense came alive for Minnesota. The Gophers outscored the Boilermakers 17-12 with Laura Bagwell Katalinich stepping up in a big way. By halftime the graduate student had six points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Her three offensive rebounds directly lead to five second chance points in the second quarter and helped the Gophers take back the lead with a 10-0 run. Purdue didn't turn away, responding with a 10-0 run of their own to regain their nine-point lead. After the back and forth, the Gophers were able to still bring the halftime deficit to just four at 30-26, by scoring seven of the last nine points of the first half.
The third quarter Purdue erupted for 27 points to outscore the Gophers by nine and extend their lead to 13. The 27 points given up by Minnesota is tied for the second most given up by the Maroon and Gold this season in the third. Purdue's 8-0 in the middle of the third quarter extended the lead to 12, and Minnesota was only able to come within nine the rest of the way.
Minnesota returns home for a border battle matchup with Wisconsin (5-13, 2-6 B1G) on Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. The game will be featured on the Big Ten Network and is the second time the two teams have faced off this season. Minnesota won the first matchup in Madison, 82-66.
