MINNEAPOLIS – Head coach Brad Frost and the Golden Gopher women's hockey team are pleased to announce the addition of Josefin Bouveng to the 2022-23 freshmen class. Bouveng becomes the first player in program history to hail from Sweden and joins Allie Franco, Madison Kaiser, and Nelli Laitinen to make up the newest class of Gophers.
Â
The left-handed forward from Vassunda, Sweden most recently played for Brynäs IF in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) where she has 17 goals and 19 assists through 21 games this season. In 2020-21, she was given the Elite Prospect Award in the SDHL. Through five seasons in the SDHL, Bouveng has tallied 133 points (69g-64a) through 142 games.Â
On the international stage, Bouveng has represented Team Sweden in three U18 women's world championships. At the 2018 championships, Bouveng took home the silver medal after falling in the title game to a United States team that included current Gophers: Taylor Heise, Abbey Murphy, Maggie Nicholson, Gracie Ostertag, Makayla Pahl, and Madeline Wethington. In 2016, Bouveng and Team Sweden took home the gold medal at the Winter Youth Olympics.Â
On Jan. 19, Bouveng was named to Sweden's Olympic women's hockey team for the 2022 Games in Beijing, China. She becomes the first Swedish Olympian in team history and the 10th player with program ties to be named to this year's Olympics.Â
Team Sweden will be competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games from Feb. 3-17, 2022 with 11 other countries. Sweden is competing in Group B alongside China, Czech Republic, Denmark, and Japan and will open the competition on Thursday, Feb. 3 against Japan.
Frost on Bouveng: "Josefin is a natural goal scorer. She has a quick release and a knack for finding the back of the net. Josefin plays a very honest 200 foot game and sees the ice at a very high-level. She has had plenty of international experience with Team Sweden's U18 team and is now preparing to play on the world's biggest stage. We are thrilled to have our first player from Sweden joining our program and cannot wait to watch and cheer on Josefin in the Olympics."
Bouveng on Why Minnesota: "I chose Minnesota because it feels so inspiring to be surrounded by world class players each and every day and together strive for big goals. On top of that, I'll receive a great education that I will have for life."
