The University of Minnesota men's golf team won its first-ever NCAA Central Regional men's golf championship in 1999 at the 21-team event played at the 7,100-yard, par-72 Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Gophers stroked a final round one-over par score of 289 to top second-place Northwestern by one shot. The top 10 finishers in the 54-hole tournament advanced to the 1999 NCAA Championships held June 2-5 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Defending NCAA Champion James McLean claimed the individual championship in the tournament, carding a final round 71 for a four-under par, three-day total of 212. Luke Donald of Northwestern, who edged McLean for Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1999 at the conference championship, was second at three-under par 213.

Three Golden Gophers finished the tournament in the top 20 individually. Junior Martin LeMesurier continued his solid play, finishing with a final round 75 for a one- over par total of 217 and a five-way tie for 10th place individually. Senior captain Adam Dooley of Albany, Minn., recovered from a 75 Friday to fire a one-under par 71 on Saturday to sneak into the top 10 with a total of 217. Senior Jeff Barney of Appleton, Minn., contributed a third-round score of 72 to place 20th individually.

The Golden Gophers and Wildcats were clearly the cream of the crop on the weekend as third-place Nebraska finished at 18-over par 882, 17 shots behind Minnesota. The other seven teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships out of the Central Regional were sixth-ranked Oklahoma State, fifth-ranked Houston, Toledo, Illinois, Arkansas, 27th-ranked Kansas and Colorado. The Buffaloes won a one-hole playoff with Kent State after the two teams tied for 10th place with 33-over par 897.

Jamie Broce of Ball State and Martin Maritz of Tulsa were the two individual qualifiers out of the Central Regional. A total of 30 teams -- nine from the West, 10 from the Central, and 11 from the East -- from each region and six individuals qualified for the NCAA Championships.
