Gopher Throws Start Indoor Season with Bang at Minnesota Open

1/8/2022 3:49:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers earned a combined six event victories on Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse and earned a number of personal bests along the way. The highlight of the meet for Minnesota was Devia Brown who broke the meet record in the shot put with a mark of 16.34m (53-7 1/2).

Browns mark came on her third attempt of the afternoon, and nearly tossed another meet record throw on her final attempt just minutes later. Brown, a 2020 indoor All-American, was joined by Tess Keyzers and McKenzie Duwenhoegger in the top three, all posting impressive marks to start the season. Keyzers tossed her best mark since 2020 with a 16.02m (52-6 3/4) while Duwenhoegger's toss of 15.45m (50-8 1/4) crushed her lifetime best, indoor or outdoors.

Freshman Shelby Frank started the party for the throws group earlier in the day in the women's weight throw. The Grand Forks, N.D., native, tossed a new lifetime best of 20.03m (65-8 3/4) to crush her previous best mark of 18.77m (61-7) and move her into the No. 8 spot in program history. Frank's mark was good enough for a second-place finish just behind Lara Boman, sister of Gopher women's soccer player Sophia Boman, who was a finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials back in June of 2021.

A few new faces made their home debut on Saturday afternoon with Nyalaam Jok and Zariyah Black both making splashes with victories in their respective events. After posting a 1.75m (5-8 3/4) last month at the SDSU Holiday Open, Jok matched that mark in her home debut to bring home the win and confirmed her spot at No. 10 spot all time in Minnesota's indoor record book. Black continued that trend, winning her second straight meet in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.59, just 0.03 behind her debut time that she posted back in December.

Other winners at the Minnesota Open included Jyala Campbell in the 200m, Anna Muellner in the 400m and Lexy Berger in the women's pole vault. Minnesota also had a handful of unattached athletes on the men's side compete on Saturday afternoon. Finn Schirmer posted a lifetime best of 8.08 in the 60m hurdles to take the victory while Mike Herauf eclpised five meters to win the men's pole vault at 5.01m (16-5 1/4) while Hannah Morris won the women's long jump with a leap of 5.55m (18-2 1/2).
