MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota fifth-year senior Joy Zhu has been named the Big Ten Women's Diver of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.

Competing in the Gophers' season opener, Zhu swept both the 1- and 3-meter boards in Saturday's victories over Nebraska and South Dakota.

Zhu was 11 points better than the competition on the 1-meter with her score of 291.00, while she was nearly 24 points better than the field on the 3-meter thanks to her 324.35 performance.

It's the fourth time in her career that Zhu has been named the Big Ten Diver of the Week, previously earning the distinction three times as a sophomore in the 2019-20 season.

She becomes the seventh Gopher to win the award at least four times in a career. Only Maggie Keefer (15), Yu Zhou (14), Kelci Bryant (7) and Sarah Bacon (5) have won the award more times in Gophers history, while Tracy Lavoi and Sarah McCrady have also won it four times like Zhu.

Zhu and the Gophers return to action this week with a two-day home opener against SMU. The competition starts Thursday night at 5 p.m. and concludes Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
