Welcome the Newcomers: Sofia Pizzoni

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program adds Sofia Pizzoni to the 2022-23 roster wearing Maroon and Gold this upcoming season. Coming from her home country of Italy, Pizzoni will be a freshman at the "U" this fall.
"We are thrilled to have Sofia joining our program and are anticipating her arrival to campus this Fall," said head coach Catrina Thompson.
Off the court, Pizzoni was academically successful throughout her high school career, obtaining top marks and a yearly nine-point average out of ten.
Pizzoni's athletic achievements began at a young age, both locally and internationally. She was the semi-finalist of the U12 Italian Championships, winner of the team Italian Championship under 12, Quarter of finals in Auret under 12. In addition, she was the winner of Lemon Bowl U14, winner of Tennis Europe in Tirana U16, winner of Tennis Europe in Kenia (Nairobi) U18, as well as winner in doubles in Croatia (U18), Malta (U18) and Tirana (U18). Pizzoni shares why she chose the University of Minnesota, her devotion to tennis, and more.
Gopher Sports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Sofia Pizzoni: I chose the University of Minnesota because it is one of the best universities in the United States and it offers many opportunities, both academically and athletically.
GS: What are you planning on majoring in and why?
SP: My major is Science, Math and Engineering. I have chosen this major because I have always liked science subjects and this type of course offers many job opportunities.
GS: What drives your passion for the game of tennis?
SP: I have always had a passion for tennis, since I was very young. I have dedicated part of my life to this sport and it represents a lot for me. I'm glad I can express myself at this University.
GS: Who is your role model?
SP: My role model is Nadal. I admire his commitment, drive, fighting spirit and mentality.
GS: What other hobbies do you possess?
SP: I like listening to music, socializing with friends and reading.
GS: What do you look forward to the most when moving to Minnesota?
SP: I expect to make many new friends, to do well in school and enjoy the rest of the team. I hope to have a good time and find myself in a new place.

Pregame Ritual: Before a match or a practice I warm up doing mobility on the ground for about twenty minutes, then dynamic stretching, gaits and shots
