MINNEAPOLIS – Three members of the University of Minnesota soccer team have garnered 2022 Big Ten women's soccer awards, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Graduate transfer, Gabbie Cesarone and junior, Sophia Boman were named to the All-Big Ten Second Team while graduate captain, Alana Dressely was given the Sportsmanship Award. For Boman, this is her third-consecutive All-Big Ten honor, while the other two Golden Gophers each receive their first plaudit.
In her third consecutive year earning an end-of-the-season All-Big Ten honor, Boman led the Gophers in points (15), shots (35), shots on goal (18), and was second overall in goals, scoring five. The Edina, Minn., native picked up Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 13 after scoring a game-winning brace against Marquette.
For Cesarone, the Second Team selection adds to her list of honors from a terrific graduate season, having earned Big Ten Defender of the Week on Oct. 11 and named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week on Oct. 18. The St. Charles, Ill., native leads Minnesota in goals, scoring six. All have been off set pieces, while five have been headers and four being game winners. Cesarone helped Minnesota earn its first result against a top ten opponent since 2015 at No. 8 Rutgers, scoring the game-tying goal.
In representing Minnesota as their Sportsmanship Award honoree, Dressely caps her career with a well-deserved award from the conference. She started all 18 matches, playing 1,536 minutes in the outside back position. She dished out a goal against North Dakota, including an assist to Cesarone's game-tying goal to clinch a point over the top-ranked Scarlet Knights.
The Maroon & Gold look ahead to post season play on Sunday, as they take on the sixth-ranked Michigan State Spartans. The match will be streamed live on Big Ten Network at 4 p.m. CT.
