EAST LANSING – Despite leading the No. 6 Michigan State Spartans for 51 minutes, the University of Minnesota soccer team fell, 2-1, on Sunday evening at DeMartin Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Golden Gophers (8-8-3, 4-4-2) outshot the Spartans (15-1-3, 9-0-1 Big Ten) 6-0 (3-0 S.O.G.) in the first half. Minnesota was led by graduate forward McKenna Buisman, who had four shots, and Amelia Brown, who tabbed two.

"McKenna (Buisman) scored a great goal, she's very capable of scoring 'highlight reel' goals," said head coach Erin Chastain. "It was fun to see in playoff game; for her to step up in that moment. We were disciplined in the first half, and we knew they would come at us in the second half… I think the next step in our growth is understanding what we're capable of and bringing that no matter what the score. The future of our program is bright, I'm really excited about the core that we have and building with this program. We are very grateful for the young women who are leaving our program and have left their mark."

A quick goal four minutes into the first half would give Minnesota the upper hand it needed to set the tone of the match. Sophia Boman dribbled down the field without issue and found Buisman open at the top of the 18-yard box. Striking with her left foot, the graduate forward finished to put Minnesota ahead 1-0.

At the 55-minute mark, the Spartans put away the equalizer. After being awarded a corner kick, forward Jordyn Wickes found herself in the six-yard box. Poking the ball past Minnesota's backline, Wickes scored, tying the game 1-1.

Wickes would finish the game winner with 23 minutes left to play, off a double assist from Celia Gaynor and Ruby Diodati.

Fighting until the end, the Gophers found multiple opportunities off set pieces but were unable to finish.

With the loss, Minnesota ends the season with an eighth-place finish in the Big Ten standings and their first Big Ten Tournament berth since 2018.
