Gophers Handle Falcons in Exhibition Play, 104-64

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (0-0, 0-0 B1G) scored 59 first half points and saw six score in double figures in a 104-64 exhibition victory over the Falcons of UW-River Falls on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena. Mara Braun scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the first half while fellow freshman Amaya Battle scored 16 points, snagged seven rebounds, handed out four assists and had four steals in her debut. 

Braun's 23 points came off a 9-of-18 shooting day for the Wayzata, Minn., native. She connected of five of her nine threes and had three steals. Next to Battle's impressive 16 was Isabelle Gradwell who matched her with 16 on 5-of-9 shooting. The Cleveland State transfer connected on a pair of threes and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double figures were starters Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux (13) and Katie Borowicz (11). The bench also saw Maggie Czinano join in on the fun with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting. 



Minnesota's offense got going four minutes into the contest when Braun hit back-to-back threes, which included a step-back three and then added a steal and score to push the lead to 17-5. Minnesota went on to hold a 15-point lead after 10 minutes of play with Borowicz scoring seven of her 11 in the opening quarter, helping the team shoot 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the floor. 

The second quarter is where Minnesota flexed its offensive game, outscoring the Falcons 30-11. Braun added 13 points during the frame to up her first-half total to 21. The Gophers used runs of 11-2 and 10-2 to push the lead to 59-25 at the halftime buzzer.

The Falcons continued to fight in the second half, with the Gophers outscoring the visitors 45-39 to earn the 40-point win. Minnesota's offense was spread around evenly during the third quarter with Gradwell scoring six while Battle scored five and Micheaux and Borowicz scoring four. In the final quarter the Maroon and Gold's offense primarily came from Czinano who scored seven, including hitting 3-of-4 from the line to cap off the exhibition win. 

As a team the Golden Gophers made 40 shots on the night on 71 attempts for an impressive 56.3 percent from the floor. The team hit eight threes on 17 attempts and was 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free throw line. The team won the battle on the glass 38-27 which includes 15 on the offensive side. The Gophers limited themselves to just six turnovers while forcing 17 UW-River Falls turnovers.

GAME NOTES: Katie Borowicz played her first game at Williams Arena in 609 days after missing the entire 2021-22 season with a season-ending surgery... Minnesota is now 4-1 all-time against UW-River Falls with the 2022 meeting being the first since 1977... All 11 players who were available to play on Sunday saw action against the Falcons with eight of them scoring at least two points... the Gophers started three freshmen in a game for the first time in over 11 years.
