MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 7, 2022) – True freshman Mara Braun made her collegiate debut with a game-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds and four steals, Katie Borowicz added 16 points, and Alanna Micheaux had a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds during Minnesota's season-opening 75-45 win versus Western Illinois at Williams Arena.
Braun finished the game 9-of-19 from the field, while Borowicz was 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Micheaux dominated the paint for the Gophers, making 6-of-10 field goals and grabbing 13 boards in 27 minutes. True freshmen Mallory Heyer and Amaya Battle added to the Gophers' 54-37 rebounding advantage, as each had eight boards. Heyer had eight points, while Battle led the Gophers with nine assists and added six points.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening quarter. The Gophers took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws from Alanna Micheaux, but missed their first eight field goal attempts of the game and trailed 5-2 midway through the quarter. But Braun got Minnesota going by scoring nine points over a span of 3:50 to key a 15-4 run and give the Gophers a 17-9 lead through one. WIU was just 3-of-16 in the first quarter.
Borowicz, who missed last season due to injury, helped the Gophers quickly expand their lead to double digits in the second quarter, as she led the Gophers with eight points, including both three-pointers she attempted. Braun paced Minnesota to a 38-15 halftime lead with 11 first-half points and added six rebounds and three steals, while Borowicz had eight points, and Micheaux led the way with eight boards and six points.
Minnesota's lead reached 30 in the third quarter, as Borowicz continued her hot shooting from long-range. Borowicz missed her opening three-point attempt of the night, but was 2-of-2 from behind the arc in both the second and third quarters to make it 55-25 in favor of the Gophers heading to the fourth.
For the game, Minnesota made 31-of-74 (.419) field goals, and the Gophers were credited with 21 assists on those 31 field goals. The Leathernecks were led by Jada Thorpe with eight points.
Minnesota returns to the court Sunday afternoon, playing host to Lehigh at 3:00 p.m. on BTN+.
