Top-Ranked Gophers Fall on Home Ice to Penn State

'U' sees three-game win streak snapped
MINNEAPOLIS - The top-ranked Golden Gophers men's hockey team dropped the series opener with No. 7/8 Penn State, 4-2, as their three-game win streak was stopped Thursday night inside 3M Arena at Mariucci.
On a night where Minnesota (7-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 B1G) was uncharacteristically turnover prone, Penn State (10-1-0 overall, 4-1-0 B1G), a team receiving first-place votes in both national polls, made them pay. The Nittany Lions scored two goals in a span of 53 seconds across the end of the second and start of the third periods, building a two-goal cushion, and handed the Golden Gophers just their second loss at home this season.
The visitors, the nation's leader in shots on goal per game, were able to generate a pair of shots on the opening shift and struck for a 1-0 lead just 6:15 into the contest. PSU capitalized on an offensive-zone turnover by the Gophers and scored thanks to an odd-man rush, silencing the home crowd. A rising shot from Matthew Knies in the high slot at the midpoint of the opening frame gave the Maroon and Gold their best chance to pull even, but it entered intermission down a goal after Justen Close made a crucial save to limit the damage.
Minnesota opened the second stanza with renewed energy and struck for the equalizer at the 17:26 mark when Logan Cooley danced around a defender at the blue line and found Bryce Brodzinski at the left circle. The senior ripped a wrist shot over the PSU goaltender's glove, making it a 1-1 contest. For the second time in his career, Close picked up an assist as he started the play with a stretch pass from behind his own goal.
A dominating shift for the Knies, Cooley and Jimmy Snuggerud line brought the building to life before Mason Nevers and Jaxon Nelson nearly gave the home team a lead on the next shift. The Gophers fired 10 of the first 11 shots 10 minutes into the second period until the Nittany Lions went to the game's first power play with 7:47 remaining in the frame. Minnesota killed off its 10th-straight penalty to keep the score knotted, 1-1. Brodzinski came inches from his second goal as his power-play shot rang off the post. With time winding down, the visitors regained the lead, scoring with just five seconds remaining in the period.
PSU added an unassisted goal 48 seconds into the third for a 3-1 edge, but Aaron Huglen finally broke through for his first goal of the season four minutes later. He controlled the puck in the neutral zone before blasting a shot from his off wing that beat the goalie and was confirmed after a video review for potential offside. Minnesota continued to apply pressure, looking to strike back, but were unable to get any closer and the Nittany Lions tallied an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remaining for the 4-2 win.
Noteworthy
Huglen scored his first goal since last year's NCAA Regional Final against Western Michigan, Mar. 27 ... Brodzinski's second-period goal was the 30th of his career, the most of any active player for the 'U' ... It was the second contest this year where the Gophers blocked 20 or more shots ... Minnesota had won the four previous meetings with the Nittany Lions ... For the ninth-straight game, Minnesota played a team ranked in the top 12 of the national polls ... Penn State faced the No. 1 team in the country for the second-straight series after hosting No. 1 Michigan last weekend and are the nation's first team to win 10 games.
Coach Motzko's Comments
"It was a tale of two games," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "You get off to a slow start and we were a little frustrated. We found it in the second period and then unfortunately, we handed them two goals. You can't do that; they're playing awful well."
Next Up: Home vs. Penn State (Nov. 11)
