Minnesota and Wisconsin set for Top-Three Border Battle Matchup

The No. 1/2 Gophers look to extend their four-game unbeaten streak against the No. 3 Badgers on Saturday-Sunday.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 1/2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team heads to Madison to take on No. 3 Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday at LaBahn Arena. Both games of the Border Battle series are set to take place at 2:00 pm. Saturday's game will be broadcasted locally on FOX9+.
Bouncing Back After a Weekend Off
The Gophers are back in action after having last weekend off. Prior to the bye, Minnesota earned a series sweep over No. 5 Minnesota Duluth at Ridder Arena. On the following Monday, the Gophers suffered their first loss of the season in the 2022 U.S. Hall of Fame Museum Faceoff Classic. The Maroon and Gold dropped a 4-1 contest to St. Cloud State in a non-conference matchup. Minnesota outshot their opponents 101-74 over the three-game stretch.
Scouting the Badgers
No. 3 Wisconsin (10-2-0) is coming off two-straight off weekends. The last time the Badgers were in action, they split a road series with Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 28-29. Wisconsin currently sits third in the WCHA standings with a 7-1-0 conference record. The Badgers are 2-2 this season against ranked opponents after splitting series with No. 14 Penn State and No. 5 UMD. Wisconsin is led in scoring by newcomers Lacey Eden (10g-9a) and Caroline Harvey (6g-13a). Minnesota went 3-0-1 in the border battle series last season.
Split in the Polls
Minnesota remained in first place in the USCHO poll this week, but dropped to second in the USA Today/USA Hockey weekly poll. The Gophers have been ranked first or second in every weekly national poll this season.
Zumwinkle Climbs the Ranks
Fifth-year forward Grace Zumwinkle currently sits at 91 career goals, good for eighth in program history. She trails fellow-Olympian Dani Cameranesi (93) by two goals for seventh. The Excelsior, Minn., native has is tied for the team lead in points (17) and has notched a point in 10/11 games this season. Zumwinkle also sits at second place in program history in career shots with 683, trailing only Nadine Muzerall (726).
WCHA Weekly Honors
Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise and sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter each earned back-to-back WCHA weekly awards before Minnesota's off weekend. Heise earned two forward of the week honors after tallying 7 (3g-4a) points, including an overtime winner, in a 3-0-1 stretch vs. No. 1 Ohio State and No. 5 UMD. Vetter started in goal in all four games during that stretch, stopping 120 shots for her second and third weekly honors of the season.
Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise continues to climb the program ranks as Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 176 career points (73g-103a) in 145 career games. Fifth-year forwards Abigail Boreen (44g-55a), Emily Oden (28g-68a) and Catie Skaja (38g-55a) are the closest active skaters to the century mark.
Behind the Bench
Head coach Brad Frost is back for his 16th season as the bench boss of Gopher Women's Hockey. Under Frost's guidance, the program has posted a 451-94-36 record with four national titles and seven conference titles. Natalie Darwitz is back behind the bench for her fourth season as assistant coach and is joined by Jessica Scott, who served as the program's Director of Operations for the last three seasons.
Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2022-23.
