MINNEAPOLIS – After posting the top freshman finish at the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championships a week ago the Big Ten Conference announced that Minnesota's Ali Weimer is the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Weimer, a St. Michael, Minn., native was a unanimous selection for the award.

Weimer's selection makes her the first Gopher woman to win the award since 2000 when Darja Vasiljeva won it for the Gophers. Weimer finished 18th overall at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships and was the top finisher for the Maroon and Gold who finished eighth as a team.

"This is an awesome honor for Ali," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "She has gotten better every race this season as she has adjusted to college competition. To be the best freshman in one of the best distance conferences in the country is a pretty impressive feat. It will be exciting to see how she builds off of this season into the rest of her Gopher career."

This season Weimer was the Gophers top runner at four of the six events that she competed in during her first collegiate season. Weimer's best individual finish at a competition this season was 10th at the Gans Greek Classic in Columbia, Mo. Weimer's 6K time of 20:41.00 at the Big Ten Championships also was her lifetime best time at that distance.

Additionally Emmet Anderson and Brianne Brewster were named Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honorees. Anderson was Minnesota's top finisher at all five of the regular season competitions he raced in, including a lifetime best 8K time of 24:43.30 at the Nuttycombe Invite. Brewster was one of the best runners for the Gophers this season, finishing as the team's top finisher at the Big Ten Preview and posted her 6K lifetime best at the Gans Creek Classic with a time of 21:00.60.

NCAA season lies ahead for the Maroon and Gold, as both the men's and women's teams will head to Columbia, Mo., on Friday, Nov. 11 for the NCAA Midwest Regional. The University of Missouri will play host to the Regional Championships, and will hold both races on the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
