'U' Reels in Rutgers in Sweep

Minnesota posted 13 team blocks

PISCATAWAY, N.J. --Ā The No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in three sets, 25-11, 25-19, 26-24 on Sunday afternoon at Jersey Mike's Arena.

With the win, Minnesota improves to 18-8 (13-5 Big Ten). The Gophers are 5-3 on the road in conference play and 6-4 overall.


Carter Booth led the Gophers with eight kills and five blocks while Jenna Wenaas had six kills, seven digs and three blocks. Arica Davis went for a team-high eight blocks.

As a team,Ā Minnesota (18-8, 13-5Ā Big Ten) hit .244 with 32 kills, 13 team blocks, 35Ā digs and fourĀ aces. Rutgers (8-22, 2-16 Big Ten) hit .099 with 35Ā kills, four team blocks, 31 digs and one ace.

Alissa Kinkela led Rutgers with 11Ā kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers came out strong, scoring six of the first nine. Carter Booth and Taylor Landfair had early kills and Landfair also added an ace. Rutgers cut it to two at 7-5 before a 4-0 Minnesota run gave the visitors an 11-5 lead and forced an RU timeout. Jenna Wenaas posted her first kill combined with three Scarlet Knights errors in the spurt. RU had a kill right after the timeout before the 'U' took control of the set with a 7-2 run, leading to an 18-8 advantage and another RU timeout. Arica Davis and Melani Shaffmaster recorded their first kills while Booth and Landfair combined for a monster block. The Gophers wouldn't allow Rutgers to get any closer than nine the rest of the way, outscoring their opposition 18-6 in the final 24 points. Minnesota closed out set one with six of the final seven points to win, 25-11. The Gophers hit .250 in the set compared to -.200 for RU. Booth led the way with three kills and three blocks while Davis had two kills with three blocks.

Set 2: A pair of Landfair kills and an ace from WenaasĀ gave the Gophers a 6-3 lead in the second set. Rutgers cut it to 6-5 before a service error and three attacking errors put the 'U' up 10-5 and forced a timeout from the home team. The Gophers extended their lead to seven at 15-8 after a block from Wenaas and Davis and an ace from Elise McGhie. The Scarlet Knights would fight back, however, scoring five of the next seven to cut the lead to four at 17-13. A couple kills from Wenaas and one from Wucherer helped the Gophers retake control with a six-point lead at 21-15. RU would get no closer than four the rest of the way as Minnesota wrapped up set two, 25-19.

Set 3: Rutgers jumped ahead in set three, scoring three of the first five before kills from Davis, Wenaas and Wucherer put the 'U' up 7-5. RU would answer back to tie it up at seven, eight and nine before a Booth kill and an RU attacking error put the Gophers up two, 11-9. RU would answer back with an ace and a trio of kills from Alissa Kinkela to take a 14-13 lead. A kill from Shaffmaster and a block from Davis and Wucherer put the Gophers back up, 15-14, causing Rutgers to call a timeout. The two teams went back and forth for the next few points with neither team leading by more than one. However, Rutgers took a 21-19 lead with a 3-0 spurt to force a Minnesota timeout. RU went up 22-19 before an attacking error and a block from Booth and Wucherer cut the lead to one. Minnesota would tie it up at 23-23 after a solo block from Booth and a kill from Shaffmaster, leading to a Scarlet Knights timeout. RU went up 24-23 and had a chance to finish the match before the Gophers scored three straight to win, 26-24.

Notable:
-The Gophers (13) posted 10+ blocks for the 16th time this season (12-4).
-Carter Booth (five blocks) became the first Gophers freshman to record 100 blocks in a season since Reagan Pittman in 2017.
-CC McGraw (9) moved up to 1,853Ā career digs with her 102ndĀ career 10+Ā dig match. She's 17 behindĀ DalianlizĀ RosadoĀ for No. 3 in Minnesota history.
-CC also crossed the 300-dig mark for the season, her fourth 300+ dig season as a Gopher.
-Arica Davis posted aĀ season-high eightĀ blocks. She tallied 15 blocks this weekend.
-It was just the second game this season Minnesota didn't have a player reach 10 kills.Ā
