MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota forward Mallory Heyer has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the first time, the conference announced Monday.
The Chaska, Minn., native posted her first career double double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Presbyterian on Nov. 20, and averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds last week while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor (14-of-21). She brought down an average of 4.5 offensive rebounds per game and added 2.0 assists and 1.0 block per game.
Heyer leads all Big Ten freshmen in rebounding average this season at 7.5 and is ranked ninth overall in the conference. The rookie is also ranked fourth in the Big Ten in average offensive rebounds this season at 3.8. She led the team with 10 fast-break points against Presbyterian and has scored in double figures in three straight games, the only freshman on the team to do so.
The honor for Heyer is the second straight for the young Golden Gophers. Heyer followed Mara Braun who earned the conference distinction last week after dropping 27.5 points per game in her opening weekend of action along with a buzzer-beating shot against Lehigh.
