STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team advanced to the SoCal Challenge Championship game after an overtime win against California Baptist, Monday night. Dawson Garcia provided the game-winning shot with 6.8 second remaining for Minnesota's fourth win of the season and a 62-61 overtime win. Minnesota faces UNLV at 7:30 p.m., as the Rebels defeated Southern Illinois Monday, 56-49.
• The win marked Minnesota's first overtime win since the Asheville Championship in 2021 when the Gophers captured the championship with an 87-80 win over Princeton. Garcia's final possession shot was the first time the Gophers accomplished the feat since Feb 11, 2021 when Marcus Carr hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left vs. Purdue. It also marked the first time since Dec 28, 2020 (Michigan State - 16) the Gophers allowed less than 20 points in a half as it held the Lancers to 18 in the first half Monday.
• Minnesota welcomed back Jamison Battle to the Gopher lineup Monday night. The preseason All-Big Ten selection had foot surgery before the home opener and was sidelined the first four games of the season. He added 11 points in 36 minutes of play in his season debut Monday.
• Pharrel Payne added his first collegiate double double when he had 15 points and 13 rebounds. It marked Minnesota's first double double since Jamison Battle's 21 pts., 14 rbs., vs Northwestern on 2/19/2022. Monday also marked Ta'Lon Cooper's 100th collegiate career game. He played in 95 with Morehead State before transferring to Minnesota this year.
• The last time the Golden Gophers faced UNLV dates back to Dec. 30, 2007 when the Rebels and Gophers played in the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. Minnesota went 2-1 in that tournament as the host, UNLV, defeated the Gophers, 81-64. Blake Hoffarber led Minnesota with 13 points and four rebounds, followed by Dan Coleman with 10 points and eight rebounds.
CALIFORNIA CONNECTION
• The Gophers are competing in the Golden State for the first time since the 2012-13 season when Minnesota defeated Southern California, 71-57, on Dec. 8, 2012. Ranked No. 14 at the time, the Gophers were led by Andre Hollins with 14 points as four players scored in double figures. The last time the Gophers faced a team hailing from California was Loyola Marymount in 2020-21 when it visited Minneapolis for back-to-back games.
• Minnesota has three team connections with the state of California. Freshman Jaden Henley hails from Ontario, Calif., while Taurus Samuels is from Oceanside, Calif. Assistant coach Marcus Jenkins is also a California native, hailing from Lompoc. The Golden Gophers also signed 2023 commit Dennis Evans, who hails out of Riverside, Calif.
ON THE DOCKET
• Minnesota is back on the road following the SoCal Challenge when it competes in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Nov. 28 when it visits Virginia Tech. Game time is set for and will be televised on ESPN2. The broadcast will also be available on KFAN, 100.3 FM.
