Borowicz's Career Night Leads Gophers to Victory over Liberty

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 27, 2022) – The University of Minnesota (4-2, 0-0 B1G) bounced back with a 77-65 victory over the Liberty Flames (2-4, 0-0) on Sunday night in Charlottesville, Va. Redshirt freshman Katie Borowicz registered a career high 21 points while Alanna Micheaux dropped 15 and nine in the victory.
Borowicz was efficient in her play on Sunday scoring her 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Borowicz also added five assists and tied her career high with five steals in over 33 minutes on the court. Micheaux was a problem on the offensive boards grabbing five in the victory and shooting 6-of-10 from the floor in 23 minutes. Off the bench Amaya Battle once again stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one block while getting to the free throw line eight times and connecting on six.
Micheaux was the Gophers primary offensive threat in the opening quarter, scoring eight points in the first 10 minutes. Liberty controled the glass with a 14-9 advantage in the opening quarter, but Minnesota scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 16-15 lead into the second. The Golden Gophers got and-one buckets from Mi'Cole Cayton with Micheaux scoring the final six points of the quarter.
In the second the Maroon and Gold extended their lead to five by halftime with Borowicz scoring 11 of her 13 first half points with a pair of threes and an and-one. She also led the Gophers on the break, finding Isabelle Gradwell with a over the shoulder pass to a seven points lead early in the second. Despite a 25-16 advantage on the boards, Liberty trailed 36-31 at the halftime buzzer.
In the second half Minnesota turned up the intensity on the boards and Borowicz continued to apply pressure on the Flames. A 7-0 run had the Gophers up early in the third highlighted by a triple from Gradwell. The final nine of 14 points in the frame were scored by the Maroon and Gold and had the Gophers up double digits heading into the fourth.
In the fourth the lead grew to as much as 14 with the Gophers using a 22-12 rebounding advantage, and holding the Flames to just four offensive rebounds, to secure the neutral site victory.
As a team the Gophers shot a season-high 46.9 percent from the floor making 30-of-64 and making six threes. With a dominant team performance in the second half the Gophers were able to split the overall rebounds at 38-38. Of the 30 made field goals the Gophers registered 18 assists and had just five second half turnovers as a team.
The Maroon and Gold will take on Wake Forest in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network. The game can also be heard on the iHeartRadio app or on KFAN+.
